And three guys to check your receipt at the door.
I didn’t say they shouldn’t get commission, only that a good salesman (or any worker) will be good regardless of what pay scheme they work under. An intelligent employee knows that their job depends on their employer being successful.
Yeah, someone with a work ethic will do a good job regardless of their pay scale. Thing is, though, a person like that is typically in demand and can go find a job where the pay and benefits is better, so it’s typically in the business’s best interest to compensate their staff commensurate with the value they bring to the company.
That is to say, an intelligent employer knows that the best way to make his business successful is find good people and keep them happy.
I have gone primarily to two different family owned music stores in the central Jersey area over the years. Both families have multiple stores.
My experience at the first store was horrible.
20 years ago I was looking for a good electronic piano such as a Roland or a Yamaha. I went to several music stores, checking out the wares.
I went into this particular one, and a helpful clerk came over to me as I was looking at the keyboards. After about five minutes, the nasty old lady who owned the store snapped at him “He’s not going to buy it. Don’t waste your time with him.”
And she was right. I finally ended up buying a $2000 88-key Yahama at the other family’s store.
Unfortunately, this nasty lady’s store was very close to home, so I occasionally would go there for guitar strings or sheet music. When the nasty old lady finally retired, her daughter took over the store. I expected her to be nicer, but she was just as cold as her mother.
My wife is a piano teacher, and often purchases music on behalf of her students and occasionally orders obscure music. She had several experiences where the nasty woman’s daughter was quite rude to her and let her know that tending to the affairs of her store were far more important than pleasing her customers.
And then there’s the other family’s store, a block away from my current home.
I go there for everything I can. They have always been helpful and the guys there are cool. If I can get something for less than highway robbery markup from them, I will buy it there rather than online.
Last month I bought a Boss GT-10 guitar effects processor from them, rather than Amazon, and I have told the guys there on several occasions that I love to support my local store because I can go there any time I want and play any guitar I want. I can’t do that with online purchases.
But the first “nasty-lady” store? I never shop there.
Guitar Center people almost never say anything to me. I just go in and play guitars and they all ignore me which I like. If I ask a question they will help me out.
