I don’t believe in physical violence, so there’s no way I would have socked the guy. But I would have been awfully tempted to spit on his expensive shoes. I most likely wouldn’t have – that sort of thing tends to end in physical violence – but I would have been awfully tempted.
Beggars should be ashamed and we should make them feel more ashamed in hopes they will use the shame as motivation to turn their lives around. They are worthless scum and should be treated as such. If they cannot take care of themselves, they should be locked up.
The story of Chris Garner shows what a homeless person can accomplish if he works hard instead of begging.
Wow. You really have no idea, do you?
eta: RE OP. what an ass. he’ll get his in this life or the next.
Um. You’re fucking kidding, right?
Tell me this is a whoosh.
I can’t believe you guys took that blatant trolling seriously.
I am sick of the attitude of many people in this country that it is wrong to expect everyone to pull his own weight.
“Just for fun, he said, ‘Get a job’.”
2.5" is a troll. You don’t know this yet?
Oh that’s not a woosh, he’s a troll like that.
…You didn’t see his famous ‘fat people should be taxed’ thread, did you?
Show not tell. You could indicate the gender with pronouns. Not that I was at all bothered by the way you phrased it. I don’t think it should be not ok to say hetero couple, but that it shouldn’t be controversial to say homo couple.
…
If public humiliation were an effective motivational tool, no one would dare claim that the solution to persons’ failure to provide for themselves is to eliminate both the ability and the necessity to provide for themselves, or proudly wave the anti-humanitarian flag by asserting that those who react to poverty by asking for help are worthless scum. Shame is a powerful motivator, but deprived of resources it motivates little besides anger, resentment and depression. Even given resources it results in retaliation as often or more frequently as rehabilitation.
This tragedy, however, is dwarfed by the moral idiocy of people who not only withhold help from these in need, but derive amusement from taunting them (at least provided their target is smaller and weaker than they are). They betray a lack of compassion and self-awareness that are no doubt vital to their pretense of humanity, but fools no one save themselves.
I don’t give money to homeless people just because they hold their hands out, but I don’t treat them with disrespect and nastiness, either. I don’t know their story; I don’t know what circumstances in their lives have led them to be where they are right now, but they’re still human beings. What’s that saying about a nation being judged by the way they treat their poorest people?
Okay, I just misread that word sock, and thought:
“Well… I suppose that’s one way to prevent him from reproducing, but what an ODD way to Punish someone”
Y’know, mswas, I’ve been thinking about that point ever since Bill Door brought it up in post #6.
I can see how the distinction might come off sounding somewhat prejudiced, but it sure wasn’t my intent to slant the account in that direction.
This happened in Polk Gulch, which means it could’ve easily been a brace of gayboys as a het set*; since it happened to be the latter I just reported what I saw. If it *had *been two gay guys I’d have definitely identified them as such.
Indeed, since I’ve got a real problem with the snot-nosed classism displayed by some of my fellow fags, if it’d been a gay couple that pulled that same shit, I’d probably be making a great big infuriated deal of it.
The days of Polk Street as a tres-gai *stronghold are long gone - sad, in a way, because it was much more of a street gay culture than anything there is now.
Fuck them. It is their fault. Maybe it is not their fault they ended up on the street, but it is their fault they are begging now instead working their way out of it like Chris Gardner - a real hero.
And we do them no good by giving them change. Shame and a cell are the best ways to love them, even if they don’t deserve love.
Probably just another dumbass saying from a Christian - those never work out in the real world.
Or maybe you were thinking of:
“The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.”
Fyodor Dostoevsky
That, of course, would be something different.
Oh shit and Cheez Whiz. Until I just now read that, I had a fair amount of respect for you.
I guess I was mistaken – apparently, you really are a spiteful, worthless piece of shit.
Yeah, but did they drive SUV’s?
I personally wouldn’t do what the fellow in the OP did (wave a twenty), but I don’t think he is much more of a jerk than the beggar. I think it is pretty damn rude to walk up to strangers and ask them for money. I’ve had some of these beggars come on pretty strong, enough so that it isn’t much less than a shakedown. I personally don’t give in, but others may feel afraid enough to do so. I know my wife has come home shaken on at least one occassion from an encounter with an aggressive beggar.
Should I punch the beggar for their rudeness? People are tacitly encouraging begging behaviour by giving them money. So, the guy gets called on his behaviour by the OP, but the beggar gets rewarded and will continue their behaviour as long as they keep getting that money. Is this teaching them to behave and interact as an equal with all members of their community? I submit that all members of society are not equals and shouldn’t be treated as such. Both types of behaviour should be discouraged, not just the one in this case who is being obnoxious.
Economy going down the tubes. layoff and plant closings. Houses being foreclosed, families in the street. What is wrong with these people. Maybe we should eat them.
2.5 is correct if it was a “professional” beggar- fuck these assholes with their little bullshit stories and bullshit signs about needing gas money for their car that is nowhere around. Some scam artist sitting on his ass all day when he could go to work deserves no respect, and SHOULD be taunted. Now those that aren’t pros and really are in a unexpected bind are a different story.
