You might be richer than you think you are: Unclaimed Money

I’m getting back between $25-50 in child support overpayment refunds. No surprise, they used to send me those refund checks almost every month until they got things figured out.

Nothing exciting but it was worth the time to fill out the forms.

Is anyone keeping a running total? My son filled out the form for his $15, then sent the URL to a friend of his who had used the same gym at about the same time. We’ll see if he was part of the settlement, too.

5 minutes? I hate you people.

I apparently have to attach 6 pieces of info including W-9, proof of living in a house I left 20 years ago,get it notarized, and sacrifice a rooster under a new moon.

And that’s the initial submission.

Imagine how the rooster feels.

I just found $59.60 for my Dad.

: winning :

I got a notice from the State of California in the mail informing me of “unclaimed money.” It turned out to be a balance on my American Express Serve card that I had stopped using ever since Costco switched to Visa.

Hm. About $32 in my name from AT&T. Probably overpayment on some bill or other.

My mom did one of these searches a few years back, and found $900 from when she and my dad had lived in Florida very briefly before my brother and I were born. Apparently it was a security deposit on an old apartment that they’d forgotten about.

I did a search and while my name didn’t show, my Dad’s did. He’s deceased so I suspect that will add hurdles (I would have to dig up all that old paper work) but it may be worth it.

Much sadness. I am NOT richer than I thought.

I was excited. VA showed that I had something, although I did think it was odd that it showed me on a street 2 over from mine,. However my first name is practically unique (Norwegian and old fashioned so not even popular in Norway) and while my last name isn’t anywhere near so unique, it is also not Jones. Further, DEEP, digging showed that it was not me but someone with almost my name (imagine Marian vs Mariana) who lived two streets over.

Oddly enough, someone with my same first and last name but a different middle initial supposedly has money available to them. The town that is mentioned is one I lived in for about 6 months. I’m not sure if that is actually me and there is a typo on the initial or by coincidence someone with my somewhat uncommon name happens to live in a town I used to live in.

UPDATE (missed the edit window): I decided to poke a little further. The address for that other person is unfamiliar to me and it says they have money in a bank I’ve never opened an account with. So yes, a wacky coincidence.

Some utilities require a security deposit to hook up. So the AT&T sum might also be a deposit.

And I am SOL. 162 hits with my last name and they are all my husband’s relatives.

Woohoo!, (maybe)

I just checked and there is a notice that the check is in the mail.
Although they claim they sent it a week ago and I haven’t seen it yet. :frowning:
For now I’ll just hope it’s just a bit slower than most mail these days, since they probably sent it back cheapskate rate with all my docs.

I looked a few years back and only found stuff for my dead uncle. He was divorced and my cousins went on to live with my former aunt’s new family she married into. I have no desire to help them out in the least - they are no longer family, and their mother was one of the worst people ever.

Checked for a number of family members a while ago and found a number of payments in my grandparent’s names - turned out to be just short of $11,000. I’d have to get named executor of their estate by the relevant county court but I’m wary of tipping off my uncle, whom I haven’t spoken to more than three times in my life. I should check to see if it’s still there.

After more than 6 months, I just got a check from the state of Arkansas for three dollars and nine cents! Oddly, the check I sent dated May 25, 2017, and the postage shows it was mailed on May 26. I wonder where it’s been sitting for half a year!

The check says “Void after 90 days,” so we’ll see if it goes through. If not, it’s hardly worth the effort to have them reissue it!

First check to see what your bank’s fee for returned checks is. Some of the big B&M banks charge a fee of $10 to $30 if you deposit a check and it bounces.

So I still haven’t filed for the $100 the state is holding for me, it seems that when I have the rooster it’s not a new moon, and when it’s a new moon the rooster goes into hiding.

But I’m really pissed that Allstate allows payments to them to be made by one one of the insured (me), but insists on refunding overpayments to both me and my wife. All the proof of her residing at the address the state has a record of for those funds is under her maiden name, which isn’t on the check. Just another hoop to jump through to get my money.
