Shock. I’m guessing it’s a shock reaction. Like how some people giggle/laugh when frightened or nervous. Either that or she’s forcing it for the sake of her family and/or public appearances.
Not to mention that travel is getting problematic these days…
I’m guessing they’ll have to replace a lot of stuff. Large gift card to local store(s)? Very practical, but it might help them out.

As for gifts, if not a card, how about an assortment of small kitchen items? Those can add up. Measuring cups and spoons, cake pans, baking sheets, a couple of mixing bowls, and so on. A GOOD cast iron skillet. Big bag of paper towels, and disposable tableware. They may not want to bother washing dishes for a while.
