Hang on… couldn’t you go into political threads and argue with the respectable, sober, intelligent and patriotic left? Or are you going to pull a Shodan and snidely dismiss the entire liberal side of the SDMB as one big intellectually lockstepped nader-loving tree-hugger?
It’s gratifying to get on any list - especially in the Pit, which I consider my natural habitat - but twice has made my day. I’m not a fan of labels, but for what it’s worth I keep failing the Conservative test on the profiling things that are done from time to time. I must admit to being irritated when I do so, which must mean that I suffer from “cog diss”. To self diagnose myself as suffering from something I don’t even believe in would, I think, qualify me as a hateful lying moronic bigot. At least, I would hope so.
1930s style conservative here. Leave it to the states!
On the hot button topics above… Doesn’t matter what I feel, I just don’t want the government sticking its nose in the matter.
(Runs naked through conservative thread)
From the issues he’s cited, I can go with Weirddave on all.
To add, addressing the issues brought up by hajario:
Racial quotas aren’t OK-we’re well past that. Get where you want to be without playing the race card.
The Kennedys are dirtbags.
I don’t support tariffs, and neither do I support price dumping.
Judicial nominees should be appointed based upon knowledge of the law, not partisan bias.
The first amendment includes flag burning, if you’re a bonafide US citizen.
Make me POTUS for a day, and people on both sides of the aisle would squeal.
I’m not anti-gay. The more you suggest that I am, the more adamant I will be that nobody understood the point of my “homophobe” disaster of a thread. I happen to live in a town, Bloomington, with a huge gay community, which I encounter on a regular basis and have absolutely nothing against. As a high-school jock I never liked hearing others throwing around the words “faggot” and “queer” in the locker room; once I called someone out on it, telling him that there’s “nothing wrong with being gay” and had to endure the awkward stares from everyone else for standing up for that issue. Even as a young child I had regular encounters with gay friends of my parents and saw loving, upstanding homosexual couples for what they were: no different from anyone else.
Once again: I am not anti-gay. My “homophobe” thread was about what I PERCIEVE to be unncecessary connotations of the word. It was not a tirade against gays.
I support gay marriage, marijuana legalization, legalizing prostitution, an end to legislating morality, civil rights, and though I don’t really care about ‘God’ in the Pledge, I’m all for a secular state.
What I hate is a religion that preaches destruction of all infidels. Simply put, it’s barbarism. And while I’ve lost the respect (if I had any to begin with) of dozens of people on this board for plainly stating my views on the savagery of Islam, I won’t budge an inch. Sorry. That doesn’t make me a rabid conservative. It doesn’t make me a conservative at all because I don’t really feel as if I am one.
As far as support for gay rights goes, Islam is about the most barbaric society towards gays that exists. Homosexuality is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.
As for the “neocons,” whom I believed were a code-name for “Jew,” and still do, don’t get the idea that I support “neo-conservatism,” because I don’t. I don’t support any one straightforward political philosophy, and I’d fit more into civil libertarianism than anywhere else.
I’ll close with this: right now, a British hostage sits in a cage surely awaiting his death, while we sit in our comfortable rooms in our homes typing on our computers, far away from the brutality and horror of Islamic terror. Let’s remember that.
Or a Bush
Well, I have freely noted in lots of threads that this Board does not have very many authoritarian / religious right conservatives. It is mainly the liberals vs. the libertarian-type conservatives. But, Jesus, there are more libertarians here than the whole party probably got votes last time in some states.
Nobody mentioned me? Not even one?
SNIFF!
Seriously, in this particularly forum, conservatives ARE a minority. I know that, but it never really bothered me. Look, Cecil’s column runs largely in “alternative” rags, so while his column has no real liberal slant, it stands to reason that most of his readers (and, hence, most of the people who check out his website) are going to be lefties.
But that’s never made the SDMB less fun. So, while I DO consider myself vastly outnumbered here, that’s not something I ever thoght was worth complaining about.
Perhaps the reason conservatives here argue that they are “few” or “a handful” is because compared to the liberals, they are! If you can call 100 out of the almost 50,000 registered members here conservatives, that IS a few, or a handful. Say there are ten times the amount that you cited. 1 out of 50 … that’s a small number.
P.S. Add me to the list!
Newsflash, dude: you’re not nearly as funny as you think you are.
What makes this place so Liberal?
From the ‘how did you find the SDMB’ type threads i gather that the way people find this place is rather varied and almost random, so how come so many of it’s members are Liberal?
(me included)
Dude! We’re conservatives here. At least put on a bowtie and wingtips or something.
There’s just one Liberal, really, he just has a few personalities.
PaulFitzroy, I don’t think I consider you a conservative. I believe “hypocritical fuck”, “liar” and “advocate of genocide” are far more appropriate.
I’m a fiscally conservative gal who supports states rights, smaller government and lower taxes. It pains me to see so-called conservatives who want to limit personal freedoms by via a Constitutional amendment.
While it doesn’t bother me, I do feel this board has more liberal members than conservative ones. Why is that observation such a problem, though?
Adjusts suspenders, fixes glasses, and gives ya a look.
I am honored. Really, no kidding.
18-82 still.
You are right that it does not make you a conservative; it makes you an uninformed hater. The OP should strike you from the list of conservatives immediately so that your brand of willful ignorance is not used to defame the conservatives. (Although, just maybe, you are a neo-con.)
(And while I am sure that some of your best friends are homosexuals, I would suggest that you take the time and make the effort to practice effective writing to commmunicate before you continue expressing yourself in ways that invite condemnation)
There’s a BIG difference between libertarians and conservatives? I thought a libertarian was a conservative who wanted marijuana legalized.
I am a mostly Social Liberal and mostly Fiscal Conservative, overall slightly right of center.
Gay Marriage? Yes.
Abortion? Yes.
Affirmative Action? Not anymore.
Flat Tax? Yes.
War in Iraq? Yes, but for more honest reasons.
Legalize Marijuana and control like booze? Yes.
Gun Registration? Yes.
Welfare? With a endgame (job training, AmeriCorps-type work, WPA-style work) yes
