I had to cross a wide road at lunch. It was rainy and windy and crappy, and I didn’t feel much like waiting for the walk signal, for one notoriously long cycle. There was a kid , maybe 18, all pulled tight in his hoodie facing away from the wind.
After 30 seconds or so a Frogger crossing opportunity appeared.
The two close lanes were clear, then a short section where all lanes were clear, then the far 3 lanes were clear. So I started across at a pace toward the middle of the road while the far lanes were still busy.
Suddenly the kid rushes past me toward the still occupied far lanes, head down, eyes closed I guess.
The horns honked, the tires squealed(sort of, the road was soaked), but all was resolved without incident. Well except the fact that the far lanes weren’t restarted in time for me to get out of the middle lane by the time that traffic made it, jackass made me block traffic
But when I got across the road the kid was there glaring death at me like it was my fault.
Pro Tip chief: Just because a road can be crossed at one pace doesn’t mean it can be crossed at all paces…and oh yeah LOOK BEFORE RUNNING INTO THE DAMN STREET!
