Reporting of such incidents would have some value if the journalist focused on why the child fell through the cracks with Child Protective Services- with some real investigative journalism done to highlight a greater social failing.
The horror stories could function to expand public awareness and drum up pressure to repair the system.
Instead it’s just sensationalism, torture porn. It doesn’t take too many bad experiences with the worst of these kinds of articles before the wiser among us realize we’re not well served at all to bother clicking on the articles. But if the articles were done with journalistic integrity . . . well, a guy can dream can’t he?

It is shocking. I mean, it’s less shocking than without those variables, but thousands–probably tens of thousands–of kids are in those sorts of circumstances and they don’t get murdered (let alone whatever else happened: I didn’t read the details).

Yes. And one thing to fear is that the sensationalized version will create just an an outcry for heads to roll that will get mollified when the heads do roll, but with little follow-up as to real corrective action.
