Carbon freezing, maybe?
EC- Yes, firing can be a horrible thing to withstand (or for some lucky ones, the best thing in the world), but, as has been wel-established, there was good cause, and had been for years. Joan had been a cancer on the department(s) for years, and was given several chances to shape up. That is the safety net.
thinking I wonder if I’m in Seven’s area.
checks Seven’s location
 screams and runs away
It’s impolite to ask personal questions, but it’s fucking rude to imput some evil reason behind "it’s none of your business’- as it is NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS! Might I suggest you fuck off?
And, although this is the PIT, it’s a thread dedicated to Maureen and her problems with her now-ex-cow-orker. Hijacking it with personal insults just because a poster has the temerity to disagree with you is being rude to the OP.
LOL. No, you may not have my credit card number. Yes, I do fear that the knowledge would be used to hurt me. Is this *really *the logical comparison you wish to make? Do you really want to compare the harm that can be done from having my credit card information to having your age information? That is the Ad hominem sieve saying that the collandar leaks.
LOL. You may suggest anything you wish. Impolite to ask personal questions? Please. It is done all the time on this board.
But he didn’t say that it was none of my business, he laid claim to Ad hominem. Had he simply said he belived it to be none of my business, I would have said “fair enough.”
Ad Hominem means: Appealing to personal considerations rather than to logic or reason.
This implied I had “evil intent” for asking. I didn’t, I was just curious how old he is. I made no accusation or appeal to personal consideration.
Lastly, where have I insulted him?
Honestly, why do any of you care how old Evil Captor is? If it turns out that he’s 55, are you suddenly going to respect his opinions? It certainly seems like you just want to hear that he’s 17 so you can dismiss him out of hand. The validity of an argument isn’t based on one’s age or life experience, but on the merits of the position being argued.
Not at all. His opinion has not been dismissed “out of hand” but responded to thoroughly and logically throughout the thread. You say Honestly? Then I respond: honestly, I was just curious. I had no nefarious designs. No hidden meaning. No ad Ad hominem attacks. Have you honestly never just been curious about something?
Care to show me where I said anything about bondage anywhere in this thread, Lute? 'Cause I don’t think that’s the defense that you seem to think it is.
Just a FYI: the Salvation Army is a church, a religious organization. Maureen’s company is not.
What part of the phrase “argumentum ad hominem” don’t you understand?
What part of “I want to understand your personal perspective on this issue” do you not understand, EC?
Evil Captor, you’re being an ass. Yes, Joan may suffer hardship, but
it’s her own fault and it’s not the company’s concern. A company is not a charity. Further, if she learns from the experience, being fired will be to her long term benefit.
What part of "it’s none of your business’ don’t you understand?
And- dudes- please stop hijacking Maureens thread for some personal crusade against EC, OK?
True, you didn’t say anything about bondage itself but
has, at best, the appearace of hypocrisy; at worst, you’ve been lying about liking bondage for whatever reason.
You’re either a little over five months too late or a little over six months too early, depending on how ya look at it. My bday is July 29th. Thanks for asking though. And watch the geezer remarks, I’m an AARP member now. Do you want me to send over a brigade of little ol’ ladies with big handbags to put you in line? I can arrange for old people in laaaaaarge vehicles to always be in front of you doing 15 mph on two lane roads too. We may be old but we’re dangerous.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled, umm… whatever this has turned into.
Lute,
I just don’t see how you’re getting this impression from the post you quoted…you’re really reading things into it here.
At worst he could be lying about liking bondage because he can’t ‘get excited’ about someone being fired? If that’s the point you are making? He wasn’t talking about sexually excited or anything…he was basically saying he doesn’t like it. I just don’t understand the point you’re trying to make here.
DrDeth, this is clearly a matter of some import to EC, as he returns to it. I felt that his life experience might have some perspective on his point of view, and truthfully, from his posts, I can not tell if he is five or fifty, though the mention of the Salvation Army suggests somewhat older, or personal experiences. I find that if someone bears an extremist viewpoint on an issue, sometimes it is handy to know where they’re coming from. That said, hijack ended, but this was no personal crusade on my part, and I am somewhat insulted that you implied so.
He said “human beings being treated badly”, not “being fired”.
Well, the folks who wind up at SA prolly aren’t saints, either. Something LIKE SA but devoted more specifically to the troublesome sorts might work. My fear is that most of them wind up in corporate management, and that’s not good for anybody.
