Will the resent school shootings result in more young people actually voting?
I for one, will march in and carry a flag for any cause that supports the repeal of the colonial era mind set that is the second amendment.
Even as a Veteran of the armed forces of the United States of America I see no need for every dip-shit from coast to coast to have the “right” to walk into Walmart and purchase a firearm.
That’s right, I said it.
Don’t like that? I’m also a strong proponent of TAXING THE CHURCH!
That being said, I can only have “Prayers and wishes” for the NRA.
I’m glad to see you recognize the real issue. The Second Amendment means there isn’t any real debate over guns in America. Why should one side enter a debate that they’ve already won? Pro-gun people have everything they could possibly want; they have no need to negotiate.
The first step in a meaningful debate over gun control would be the repeal of the Second Amendment. Then gun control would be subject to the normal give-and-take of the legislative process. But as a first step, repealing a constitutional amendment is like climbing Mt Everest.
Unlikely, the shooting that got the most publicity, Columbine, was in 1999 and the youth vote since then has not gone up by much. In 2016 voters over 50 were more likely to say that gun issues were very important than voters under 30. Most voters are smart enough to know that while shooting get lots of publicity, the average person is much more likely to die in an ATV accident.
I think the landscape is sufficiently different in 2018 than it was in 1999 that the impact of these events will result in a meaningful shift. If more young people vote I think that’s a good thing.
A couple weeks ago lawmakers were asking the Tide company (P&G) to redesign Tide Pods so they look less tasty to young people and now we want young people to craft public policy. Some of those policy proposals include things like, increasing the age that we trust them with firearms.
LBJ had a hand in both issues. I guess people voting for him counts, though.
Ans as I mentioned, I was wrong about influence in the last Presidential election.
“Millennials” are in some cases more likely to support gun rights than older generations like Baby Boomers. 18-29 year olds are less likely to support a so-called “assault weapons” ban than 50+ by about 13 percentage points (Pew). In other cases they are no different than older generations.
Gotta love this new right wing meme of making fun of the survivors by joking about tide pods. As if every teenager in this country is the same. I could not be prouder of these kids. But please continue to ridicule and belittle them Republicans. Really good look there.
