Your Birthday Meal

Well, it is that time of year again when I get to pick my favorite meal to make. For years I’ve had a Porterhouse, corn on the cob, baked potato, rolls (yes, I like carbs). Unfortunately I don’t have the appetite I used to so will probably scale back some. I’m thinking of doing a filet with maybe a green peppercorn sauce. Maybe some crab as well.

So, what is your Birthday meal?

One year, I bought a ton - a TON - of king crab legs, salt potatoes, corn on the cob, french bread, and made a Caesar salad. My word! We melted some butter, cut up some lemons, broke out the nutcrackers for the shells, and hogged out like we haven’t done before or since. HEAVEN! Thanks, Capt. Phil! … The only time in my life I’ve read a recipe with the words “… a pound of cooked crabmeat” and not rolled my eyeballs. I had MORE than a pound of cooked leftover crab. Woot!

my single biggest regret in life is my adult onset allergic reaction to shellfish. i die a little inside every time someone discusses crustaceans.

My birthday is in November and I love a good soup, so every few years I ask for a good cioppino and some good crusty bread.

BBQ ribs, coleslaw. And an utterly decadent chocolate cake.

It’s a meal at my (current) favorite steakhouse, Eddie Merlot’s, paid for by my in-laws. (See? They are good for something after all!)

Happy birthday, Spud! Mine’s Saturday.

I don’t know what I want for dinner, but I hope it’s followed up with yellow layer cake and chocolate frosting.

My birthday was yesterday  My SO took me on a horseback ride and then for tapas and wine. My friends gave me cheesecake on Saturday - I prefer cheesecake over all other types of cakes, pure (no frou-frou bullshit like raspberry or white chocolate sauce). Usually, I choose sushi for my birthday, but then again, I choose sushi every chance I get.

Crispy aromatic duck.

With plum sauce not hoi sin.

I know it’s a Chinese dish invented in the UK, but I don’t care about its authenticity - it’s gorgeous and I could eat it all day long.

My birthday meal would have to be my favorite breakfast. A couple of slices of french toast made with my dense and flavorful homemade bread, three sunny side up fried eggs right on top of the french toast and a nice piece of fried ham. Top it all with real butter, not margarine, and real, not corn based, maple-vanilla syrup and that’s a good way to start the day.

I’m a sucker for my mom’s meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and fresh green beans. I’m 42 and she still invites my brothers and sister over on our birthday and lets us pick our birthday meal(s). This has been my selection five years running.

Not saying this is my favorite meal, but since my birthday is near Memorial Day, we all gather at the family cottage on Buckeye Lake and eat hot dogs, potato salad, and cole slaw.

I always make sure there will be all the ingredients for Cincinnati-style coneys.

And yes, I berate people who put ketchup on their hot dogs.

Ah, seafood has always done it for me. Scallops, shrimp, lobster — all or any of the above. Spinach souffle and some grilled fresh summer squash. A large glass of dry white wine and a thin slice of chocolate cake.

I’m putting in my order now. October 10 is a very big day this year.

Birthday breakfast:

“Movie-Star Breakfast”
Avocados, bacon, cilantro, and fresh raw onion, and rolled up in a flour tortilla. It’s essentially my four favorite things rolled together. I came up with the name in college when I was utterly broke. I thought, “Man, if I was rich and famous I could eat anything I wanted!” And this is what I would want.

Birthday dinner:

Bone-in ribeye steak, grilled for me over charcoal by The Other Shoe, who can out-cook any steakhouse. No clever name, just Teh Best Steak Evah. (And that’s not a clever name.)

Ha. I would have guessed something else. :: points to user name ::

Last birthday was a ribeye steak, creamed spinach, soup, and banana cream pie from Ruth’s Chris. God, I love good steak.

Growing up my favorite was always fondue. Mom had a fondue set, would cube up meats, veggies, we’d have little condiment/dipping bowls.

I sorta miss it. Yeah, it takes awhile, but it really encourages family conversation at the table.

Me too! Happy birthday!

I don’t have one favorite meal, but it would probably involve seafood of some variety. Scallops are an all time favorite of mine, but shrimp and muscles are lovely as well.

Macayo restaurant is my favorite. Last year had a chimichanga and a margarita. Yum! I was then surprised with a football shaped cake.

Happy Birthday Spud!

When I was a kid, my favorite birthday meal was the chicken quatro formaggi from Ecco, an Italian restaurant in Old Town Alexandria (RIP :(). It was so rich and buttery, and they served it in this seemingly bottomless bowl, which meant I always had leftovers for lunch the next day. Plus they always had breadsticks to snack on while we waited to be served, and if I hadn’t gorged myself on the pasta there would be cannoli for dessert (and the waiter would stick a candle in it and sing happy birthday to me).

For my next birthday, I want to recreate this dish which I had a couple weeks ago (except I had them hold the tomato) from another wonderful Alexandria restaurant, Evening Star Cafe in Del Rey.

So delicious. I love the fluffy-sticky texture of gnocchi, so it’s one of my favorite food regardless of presentation, but the addition of the subtle flavors of bacon, spinach, and truffle, plus (my food BFF) caramelized onions made this heavenly.

Either that or get a spinach & ricotta & caramelized onion brick oven pizza, because that wins every time as well.
