That was the famous Kimberly Mays/Arlena Twiggs switched, and that is not what happened. Kimberly’s parents went home with Arlena, who had a genetic heart defect. They found out two years before she died that her blood type did not matach theirs, but made no effort to find out what happened. After she died, they fought for custody of Kimberly. The mother in the couple who raised her and had, the father had married and divorced, and then raised Kimberly as a single parent.
There was NO evidence that the switch was intentional. That was the Twiggs’s reasoning to get Kimberly after Arlena died. The delay caused Robert Mays a chance to know his genetic daughter. I’d be pissed too.
Mays won custody of Kimberly, but later she went to live with the Twiggs. And was arrested for prostitution and had her biological son taken from her because she was pegged an “unfit mother.”
A lot of diseases, including HIV, can be transmitted through breastmilk, so no, I don’t think she’s overreacting. Unless she’s actually said some hippie thing like it’s ruined her perfect bonding, and she isn’t worried about her child’s health because she’s planning on feeding it lots of melon and homemade babyfood, and not vaccinating it.
Now, I know someone who totally freaked out that her supposed-to-be 100% breastfed baby got a single bottle of formula in the hospital, and I mean she called a lawyer and asked if she could sue for malpractice. That’s overreacting.
In the movie it was never proved that the babies were switched. This was of course befor DNA testing was available, the blood grouping was inconclusive, and the other family refused to be tested. I don’t know how factually accurate it was.
