Your favorite 90's sitcoms

I HATED “Roseanne”, if I wanted to hang out with a family like that, I’d spend time with my own family!

You forgot Working, which was damn hilarious when it wasn’t being brilliant.

That one was good. I always loved Dana Gould, and outside stand up all I can ever remember seeing him in was Seinfeld…where he got to dig a hole for himself in central park.

Seinfeld is not a sitcom. I don’t know what it was, but not a sitcom.

The Drew Carey Show! It’s the only show I really liked on that list.

Why do you feel it was a sitcom? It seemed to fit quite well with the format.

My “Other” vote is for Sports Night. Last TV show I watched regularly…

Oh, of course it was. It had all the defining characteristics of a situation comedy even if its situations were more based on life’s minutiae.

Right. It was sketch comedy (same genre as In Living Color), not a sitcom.

Looking at that list (particularly when compared with the crappy 80s list) I have to say the 90s were the golden age of sitcoms. There are a lot of good ones there.

And it also makes me realize how pathetic the 00s are by comparison. Damn reality shows.

Oh and also, one missing from the list is the great (if not often watched, I guess) MTV sitcom, Austin Stories. Loved that show.

I could also mention Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete and Pete, a sort of absurdist sitcom for hipster kids.

My Two Dads probably belongs on the poll.

1987 - 1990

Can’t really vote, because I’ve not even heard of most of those let alone had a chance to watch them. But does Northern Exposure count? I’ve seen that.

Probably technically a “dramedy,” but I could see how a convincing case could be made.

The Ben Stiller Show???

What about “Unhappily ever After”, the Married with Children spinoff.

As hard is it is to believe now, the first couple seasons of Drew Carey and Home Improvement were insanely funny. Or maybe that was because I was 14 at the time.

However, nothing has ever come CLOSE to being as brilliant as seasons 1-8 (1989-1997) of The Simpsons.

I used to love News Radio so much.

I love, love, love NewsRadio. Phil Hartman, of course, was pure genius. But the rest of the cast was fantastic, too. Even Joe Rogan and Andy Dick were good. Anything with Stephen Root is worth watching. The writing was excellent and avoided sitcom cliches, as well as making fun of them sometimes.

Friends is my absolute favorite “mainstream” sitcom. Standard issue characters and situations, but the cast and their chemistry with each other raise it to a higher level than other bland sitcoms. The writers knew the characters well. Story arcs were built upon in an almost serial format. Outside of the first, every season had a continuing story that plays out quite well when watching season sets on DVD.

The Drew Carey Show was great. Funny jokes, and I loved the quirky side of the show. It wasn’t just a standard sitcom- it used gimmickry to a great effect. The ‘find the mistakes’ shows, the Live episodes, the Very Special show. Not to mention the occasional musical numbers and the random non plot related cameos (including a job interview with Daffy Duck!). Unfortunately, it jumped the shark badly when Winfred-Louder closed and Drew started working for The Never Ending Store. Don’t get me wrong, there were some good moments during that era, too. But it doesn’t compare to the better known era.
