(notice how I waited till December to start this thread)
Ahhh the Christmas movie season is upon us and one of my favorite things about Christmas movies (movies about Christmas not ones released at Christmas) are the miracle endings.
For instance the big four.
It SNOWS! There was no snow, Bing sings and bang! There is snow and the ski lodge will be saved at the end of White Christmas
The spirits do it all in one night from (pick a version) A Christmas Carol (personally I like Scrooged with Bill Murry but I have no taste)
She finds the freeking CANE! SHE FINDS THE CANE IN THE HOUSE!!! OH MY GOD DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!!! (Of course I mean the original) Miracle on 34th Street.
Then there is my personal favorite.
George realizes that his life is not meaningless and he runs home, and Zazu is feeling better and then everyone brings him cash (yes that is the best gift) and then his brother shows up and then the (sniff) the bell rings on the tree (sob) [give me a second]
Oh well the end of It’s a Wonderful Life to me is the best Christmas Miracle (or CM if you like) in movies.
The Miracle on 34th Street from the mid '90’s, with Sir Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle.
There’s this scene where some little girl sits on Santa’s lap and Kris tries to talk to her. Then her mom comes up and says, “It’s OK, you don’t have to talk. She’s deaf. She just wanted to see you.” The Kris proceeds to sign with her. The way the little girls’s face lights up… snif
My favorite is in Miracle on 34th Street …but it’s not the cane at the end.
It’s the fact that nearly everyone in this movie acts from cynical or selfish motives: Mr. Macy supports Kris Kringle’s and refers customers to other stores because it’s a great promotional gimmick. The judge doesn’t want to lose votes. The guys at the Post Office just want to get rid of all the dead letters to Santa. Even the lawyer takes Kris Kringle’s case for publicity reasons because he thinks it’ll be good for his career. But the cumulative effect of all this cynicism produces a fantastic outcome–proving that Santa Claus exists. I think that’s wonderful.
