Yes, I know it’s too early, but my husband and I are going on a massive roadtrip in December and I won’t be able to watch movies then.
So, what are your favorite Christmassy movies? You know, Santa Claus, and ho-ho-ho, and mistletoe… and presents for pretty girls…
(I did a search and I didn’t find a thread like this which, to put it simply, just ain’t right. I’m assuming my search skills are, to put it simply, sucky.)
The musicals group is going to be doing Holiday Inn and White Christmas. The only other movie I watch every single year is Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol. (The songs – by Jule Styne – are wonderful.)
I have never seen It’s a Wonderful Life, and at this point it’s policy.
I did one a month ago, which was *way * early. Here is a link if you want. Link
But I see no reason to not have a new one:
Animation:
I dunno, *Rudolf * was good, and *Charlie Brown * of course, but I think *The Grinch * is my favorite.
Movies: Miracle on 34th Street, the original version. Its a Wonderful Life.
*Scrooged * - up until the end where it petered out.
And recently, I enjoyed Elf;
The Bishop’s Wife A Christmas Story (I wait for this to be on TNT for 24 hours straight every year, then torture my family with it) The Nightmare Before Christmas
I saw Wonderful Life in the early '80s, before it had become a Beloved Holiday Classic. As a matter of fact, we saw it at a local bar with nightclub pretensions in a college town as part of their weekly film series. Sentiment was not a big part of the venue.
Divorced from the Beloved Holiday Classic baggage, it was quite an enjoyable little flick. Nothing earthshaking, but it had its moments…
Not normally a movie you think of when the term “Christmas movie” comes up, but at it’s core is the same Christmas plot of recently: family comes home together for Christmas even though they each detest each other. But unlike most Christmas movies, the movie doesn’t end with each of them realizing how much they love their family (although a case can be made for Henry and Eleanor; at any rate the brothers still hate each other and their parents).
I saw A Clockwork Orange for the first time one snowy Christmas, so I associate it (and its soundtrack) with the Christmas season
Bernard and the Genie
Black Adder’s Christmas Carol
Edward Scissorhands
The Thing (John Carpenter – again, I saw that on Christmas Day, it’s a brilliant movie, and it’s got snow.)
One of our holiday favorites is The Thin Man, which isn’t exactly about Christmas but it does take place over Christmas. It’s funny and cozy, and Christmas-y enough that we enjoy watching it every year and it feels seasonal while still providing a break from the very Christmas movies.
One of Mr. Del’s favorite Christmas movies is While You Were Sleeping, which I personally find adorable because he never likes chick type movies. I can’t tell if it’s a fair Christmas movie on its own, or just has great sentimental value to us. Yes, I know, it is to gag. His other favorite Christmas movie is The Ref, which runs more toward his usual taste.
No, the George C. Scott A Christmas Carol. No contest. (Sim was too campy.) Maureen, I saw A Christmas Story the other day on TCM. It may be impossible to gt tired of that movie.
