It was a tie between Fargo, No Country For Old Men and Burn After Reading.
The Ladykillers and O Brother, Where Art Thou are tied for second place.
True Grit only recently came out and I like to give movies a while to settle in my mind before deciding just how much I like them (because I tend to think “best movie ever!” whenever I come out of seeing a movie that I really like for the first time - and I really like True Grit).
These guys are amazing. It really speaks to how great they are when so many of their films occupy my top 20 or whatever.
What was the point? I just watched it, and it rather confused me. Was the point (/moral) that you shouldn’t let trouble in life bring you to dishonesty? What was the role of the demon rabbi?
Overall, I think I have to go with Fargo, for the perfect balance of mainstream appeal and Coen Brothers quirk.
After that, Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, The Big Lebowski, and Barton Fink. I enjoyed O Brother, but it’s a middle-of-the-pack Coen Brothers movie for me. I’m honestly a little surprised at how well it does in these sorts of polls.
I’ve seen everyone of their films. Picking between Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski was almost painful, but I ultimately chose TBL. Just please don’t make me have to choose again!
The Dude Abides, so The Big Lebowski it is. O Brother, Miller’s Crossing, Burn After Reading, and The Man Who Wasn’t There are all excellent, too- but ultimately, I keep coming back to The Big Lebowski.
