Your favorite Come-Back Sauce

Seventeen years living in Oxford (from birth 'til . . .) and I never heard of Come-
Back Sauce – not even oncet!

Nor have I heard of John Currence’s great restaurants in Oxford. Which ones did he own/run, elelle?

John Currence is a well-respected Southern chef, originally from New Orleans, who runs City Grocery, a great restaurant in downtown Oxford,MS. He also has a major interest in Ajax Diner, also on the Square. Ajax is more downhome, with plate lunches (Meat-n-three, y’know). They have a great Comeback Sauce, usually served with their fried dill pickles, but they’ll let ya have some for fried okry, too.

Both restaurants have been there well over a decade. John also has an interest in another restaurant, but that’s past my years there. so I don’t know it.

Ninety Wt: “It’ll make a puppy pull a train.” Hee, love that!

Oh, no wonder I didn’t know about him. I haven’t live in Oxford (on College Hill Road) in 25 years! But I still loves me some fried okry (and though I haven’t had 'em since high school, Sonics Drive-In’s fried pickles (pickle-ohs)).

I agree with you about most forms of okra, but it’s really tasty when it’s pickled.

Interesting that 3 people in this thread have lived in the same small town.

I’m with you too Evil Captor. I think my favorite brand is called Texas Pride.

Hell, I thought maybe they called it a recicipie in Mississippi and it was just missing a ‘c’ and an ‘i’ to make it easier for us uninformed folks.

And I live in the original. 'Cept it’s a city.

I’m wearing mine.

I do not like come back sauce. But, until now, I never knew the name of the disliked condiment. And I’m so Southern my snoring drawls.

So, thank you for this thread.

When the OP described it, I thought of remoullade sauce. But not because I ever ate it. I think I’ll give it a try, if NinetyWt can find the recipe she (?) was thinking of…

Ain’t nuthin’ wrong with salmon croquettes, or okra! Y’all jes don’t know whut’s good!

I made some, and wasn’t impressed. It might be better if one made the mayonnaise from olive oil and eggs instead of the cotton seed oil stuff.
But then I confuse jambalaya and gumbo.

One sings and looks like a white woman now, the other played bass and drums and had a bad drug problem.

To add some fun and surprise spicyness to fried okra, Dad would slice up some fresh jalapeños. Throw them into the bowl of sliced okra before the breading and frying, then do them all up together.

It’s very rude, tho, to not tell your guests that you added hot peppers. And he never did it to first time guests, either. But, if you were over for supper and reached for the peppers or the hot sauce, we figured y’all just liked it that way, too, and would be game for tryin’ the hot stuff. And regular family meals always had jalapeños available. Fresh. Never pickled (yuck).

I got nothin’.

A guy like that buys itching powder by the pound.

Well, you do have to like peppers to appreciate it fully.
Like I said, it’s rude to spring it on an unsuspecting guest.

Groucho Marx liked his cigar, but he took it out of his mouth once and a while.
…I’m not sure that’s an appropriate metaphor, but it’s funny.

Duly noted, good sir. And IIRC this Uni town was named after the original Oxford. What we think is old, doesn’t hold a candle to what’s Old in the Old Country.

The diffference between the US and the UK:
People in the US think 500 years is old. People in in the UK think 500 miles is far.

See, folks, this is why we do vanity searches. NinetyWt I do indeed know what comeback sauce is. However, I have never made it cause I ain’t a Mississippian, as evidenced by the fact that I can read and do wear shoes. :stuck_out_tongue: It is good stuff though and I do enjoy mass quantities of it whenever I am in Mississippi. Believe it or not, I do have reasons to go there from time to time.

Oh and a couple other things. Y’all is spelled “Y’all” not that abomination that is :shudder: “Ya’ll” :shudder:. Also, okra goes in gumbo, not jambalaya.

Okra, by the way, is best eaten fried or pickled, fried being the best. It may, however be added to soups and certain stews. The best way to eat fried okra is to combine two to three pounds of sliced okra with one finely chopped green tomato, one small finely chopped onion, and two or three seeded and finely chopped banana peppers. Lightly coat the okra and other stuff in flour that has been salted and peppered to taste. Fry in small batches in enough veggie oil to coat the bottom of your frying pan. You will have to recoat your pan with oil several times but it is worth it. Remember to keep the cooked okra and other veggies warm until it’s all done. We’re talkin’ heaven here folks!

You live in Oxford now? I better not tell you my name… :stuck_out_tongue:

No, no, hun. I divorced and my Ex still lives there. I haven’t lived there in 19 years. I lived in Oxford 3 times in my life: 1. as an infant, when my dad ws in school; 2. As a pre-teen and teen after Daddy began teaching there; 3. As as student. I recieved a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS there as well.

I’m bringing back this zombie to say that I am appalled at how rude people were to Ninety when she crafted a friendly O.P. asking for help.

We’re discussing Comeback sauce elsewhere and she remembered this thread.

I read the posts and I remember feeling just horrible when people treated one of my posts here similarly. I never understood why people post just to be mean.

If one is unfamiliar with something, why would one post in that thread?
