Your favorite final words

I think you should omit the exclamation point - this was said in a rather deadpan tone of voice.

Or put it outside the quotation mark.

From the Simpsons:

“I’ll die before I’ll surrender, Tim.” ―The motto of Rommelwood Military School

Who’s Tim?

One of the most beautiful “exit lines” was that of General “Stonewall” Jackson:

“Let us cross over the river and rest in the shade under the trees.”

Einstein, right before he died, urged his caretaker to come over and gave her his final last words. Unfortunately it was in German and the caretaker didn’t speak a word of it. Could have been the secret to time travel. Could have been Einstein saying he just pooped himself. Who knows.

Oh yeah, in high school English the teacher would read to us from a massive book of “Japanese Death Poems.” The Samurai had this tradition of, right before dying, scrawling a last haiku with whatever they had on hand. The book was actually largely a collection of uncompleted poems for that very reason. It had the Japanese version (which my teacher would read in his best gruff kung-fu movie voice) and then the not-adjusted-for-meter English version. They were all pretty amazing, too, but unfortunately I can’t remember any.

the wind from a katana
aaargh

My grandfather said to my grandmother:

“I’ve put a glass of wine for you on the river bank.”

Perfect.

“More weight!”

Reminds me of Gary Oldman in “The Professional,” shortly after realizing that a mortally wounded Jean Reno has pulled the pins from a dozen grenades and he has no hope of withdrawing to a safe distance before detonation. Except he was a bit more stoic:

“Shit.”

So badass.

He wouldn’t write “aaargh”!!

My favorite last words were John Wayne’s as Sgt Styker in “Sands of Iwo Jima” “I’ve never felt so good in my life. How about a cigarette?” and then he gets shot by a sniper.

My last words should be “Was it good for you too my beautiful sexy sweet little 20 year old bride?”.

Perhaps he was dictating.

I generously set up the straight line, you dutifully delivered the punchline.

But why the link to the source? If you think I didn’t know what I was doing there, your mother was a hamster.

The moose on the wall at the lodge : “What is that? A gun?”

“Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.”

Steve Jobs

“I’m Pat fucking Tillman! Why are you shooting at me? I’m Pat Tillman!”

  • not 100% verified, but probably as best as we’re going to get.

I always liked Goethe’s :
Traditionally “mehr Licht” [‘more light’]. They’re possibly not his very last words, but close; although others think it could have been ‘mehr nicht’ [‘no more’] which works nearly as well.

That sounds like the ending of Leon - but I’m no film buff and I haven’t seen The Professional, so perhaps they are similar.

They are the same movie, as a quick look at IMDb would have shown.

Or perhaps I’ve been whooshed.
