Going back to TR, I’ve read a couple of bios and seen a couple of documentaries, and I still don’t know how I feel about him. Yes he established the national parks and he busted some trusts and spoke out for the working man, but he was also a racist and a warmonger. Do I forgive him for not being progressive enough, the way I forgive Jefferson for opposing slavery while not freeing his slaves?

He was about average for his time, actually. He didnt actually have any wars while president, and he helped end the Russo-Japanese War.

TR was certainly a warmonger but he was pretty progressive on racial issues for his era.

Ignorance fought – I’d always imagined until now, that he did indeed telegraph the word. I take it then, that the companion episode of classical wit a decade-and-some later – Lord Dalhousie taking over Oudh state into direct British rule, and telegraphing back home “Vovi” – “I have owed” [Oudh] – is equally spurious.

I have to admit that I’ve never even heard of this one.
