Your favorite license plate

I’m talking about the design of license plates, not what people’s vanity plates say. Which state/province/whatever has the best license plates?

I’m don’t think I really have any favorite, but the Kentucky license plate I’ve been seeing recently, with the smiling sun, makes me smile too for some reason. I’m not entirely sure whether I’m laughing with it or at it, though.

The license plates for the Northwest Territories are unique. They are probably my favorite in North America. In the United States, Arizona and Utah both have nice scenic plates.

God, do we hate that design. When they introduced it, half the state started screaming for an immediate redesign. However, since the state is broke, that’s not gonna happen.

My favorite plate? The Tennessee version of the University of Kentucky plate, because ours (KY’s) are not nearly as good.

Sweet God, do I hate that plate. Fortunately for me, I moved out of Kentucky just before they changed it.

To recap: for years, we had a plate that featured the spires of Churchill Downs and a picture of horses. I thought this was a great plate, celebrating one of the things we can really be uniquely proud of in KY. However, it was no end of trouble–the fundaloonies objected to the support for an institution of gambling, and the horse picture was remarkably similar to the one used in the logo of the Kentucky Horse Park, a copyrighted image.

So they changed it to a plate featuring hills with clouds rising up out of them. I hated this plate because it makes everyone I’ve asked think of the Smoky Mountains–which are, for the record, in Tennessee.

Then they changed it to the current plate, universally referred to as the Teletubbies plate, as the color scheme and smiling sun bring Teletubbieland inevitably to mind.

I’m moving back next year, and if they haven’t changed it, I’ll be paying extra for the UK plate.

I love the Hawaii plate with the rainbow on it. Makes me sigh happily.

Lots of Wisconsinites (an ex-Wisconsites) have fond memories of the basic yellow with black letters plates. One could spot a fellow 'ite easily.

Same with the old Pennsylvania blue-and-yellow plates. Very easy to spot and no cheesy Teletubbies references.
