Today is the 100th aniversary of the birth of Billy De Wolfe, my favorite old poofter from forties and fifties movies. Who was your favorite poofter? Edward Everett Horton? Eric Blore? Kenneth Williams?
I think my definition of “poofter” is far from standard… Carry on.
So it’s Kenneth Williams, then?
…sure, yes, anything to sound like I know what I’m talking about.
Edward Everett Horton
Gentleman: No one loves me!
EEH: I love you sir!
Gentleman: Oh, quit it!!

I like EEH too, but it’s hard to beat Ernest Thesiger in Bride of Frankenstein.
I like the ‘Carry On’ poofters: Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, and Francis Alick Howerd.
If by “poofter” you mean “obviously gay,” then my vote has to be for Peter Lorre.
Frankie Howerd, I think, if he counts. Kenneth Williams was great, but only in small doses for me.
Huh? I never thought Peter Lorre was “obviously gay,” other than as Joel Cairo in “Maltese Falcon.” But in the other roles I’ve seen him in, the common point seems to be “creepy” or “slimy,” not gay.
I am glad, though, that you defined “poofter,” because I wasn’t sure what it meant when I opened this thread…!
Infamy! Infamy!
