your favorite purchase

Without a doubt, my computer. Not because it’s terribly special to me (even though it was the first real thing I bought with the money from my cool job), I can always by another computer. But that hard drive contains the last year of my life on it. All the crap that has come out of my brain and through my keyboard resides on that little thing. If anything happened to it I’d… well I’d salvage what’s possible from when stuff has found its way onto other computers and move on with my life, but I’d be damn pissed off!

1981 Honda Civic Station Wagon.
Best car I have ever owned.
I had gone over a year with out having a car(no license, state took it back) It was in the back row at the dealership I was working at. High mileage, small car at a Lincoln dealer. A little TLC was all that it needed. She went where ever I wanted to go, got great fuel mileage, around 30mpg, roomy, easy to work on. I miss that car. It was a full 15 months after I stopped driving it to have it towed away.
My eyeglasses. I would be less than useless without them.

Oooh! Bestest ever buy! 1994 GMC Jimmy 4x4. Ordered from dealer, saved $6000 from what he had on lot, plus got a lot more options I could really use. Got to take my grandma to her favorite cemetery on top of a steep, grassy hill that she was unable to walk up. It works well for vacations, funerals, weddings, and regular commutes. Don’t know what I’d do without it.

I would have to say that my best purchase was…my Guess outfit…from Glasses to the shoes. Yeah!
I am a clothing freak!

TVeb, you’re quickly becoming one of my favourites. That literally made me laugh out loud in utter understanding. My dog is right now looking at me wondering just what in the heck is so funny. Or maybe she wants to go pee. Hard to say.

As to the OP, I think one of the first things would be my autographed Jim Marshall photography book. Jim is god, 'nuff said. Next would be my monster-sized framed Miles Davis poster, followed by my antique Champagne Duval-Leroy poster. After that, the ring that John bought me for my birthday two years ago (I put it on lay-away since I couldn’t afford to buy it, but he paid it off as a surprise to me. Does that count?), followed by whatever books I could grab. Only other thing would be my Winnie-the-Pooh, but I hate to say that in a public forum. :o

I like my Leatherman. The ultimate in Geek Chic.

On a regular basis, some friend will need <insert tool>.
I pull out my Leatherman.
Then they give me a look that says, “Why would you carry that around?”
Hey, they’re the one that needed a mini-screwdriver to fix their glasses in the middle of a basketball game. :wally

My computer and my car. My computer was the first thing I bought with money I actually earned at a real job. It was $1300 for the PC, a scanner, a printer, and a desk. I got my first car right before I started college in the fall, it costed me $1500. Some people make fun of my Fiero, but they are just too dumb to recognise true coolness when they see it;).

Interesting…I’ve never really thought about it before, but almost all of the possessions I truly cherish are either gifts or things that I made myself, or with friends–pewter figurines my mother gave me, a kluged-up laser rifle I built with some friends one demented college night, the bamboo saxophone I made from cane I cut in my Dad’s cane patch. Those are the things I’d grab first. But if we’re going to limit it to purchases:

My hardcover copies of P.C. Hodgell’s Godstalk, Dark of the Moon, and Seeker’s Mask. I searched for the sequel to Godstalk for seven years, meeting blank stares and asking the wind for guidance, before I found them (this was before the advent of convenient online searching). New editions are available from Amazon now, but I won’t be parted from my hardcovers.

My Larry Elmore prints–they evoke so many memories of gaming into the wee hours with my friends, against a backdrop of prints and bookcovers graced by Elmore’s talent.

My Faire boots–they’ve carried me through so many adventures with my IFGS friends, they’re almost like old friends themselves (old friends in need of oiling, but old friends nonetheless). They were also the first purchase that brought home to me the fact that I was no longer the poor-but-dishonest college student who worked two jobs and counted cards on riverboats to help pay his way through school.

keeper0, the Leatherman could go without saying since I would inevitably be wearing it. I’ve gotten those same “looks” and thought the same thing. Do you flip yours open like a butterfly knife and scare the crap out of people, too?

//slight hijack// In 1985 I was sleeping in a house that burned to the ground (arson.) I took about 30 seconds to look for my dog, which was almost the last 30 seconds of my life. My dog died, and I barely made it out of a second story window, buck naked & singed. Let me tell you, in that situation you’re not concerned one iota about possesions!

I’d still try & save my dogs & cats, though.

I would have to say my most important purchase is my house. And my newest spoiled~rotten~weiler puppy, Cooper, (aka Shalaka’s All Moosetracks.) He has fabulous bloodlines & will be a champion!

My most recent favourite purchase, apart from Cooper, are my pink snakeskin boots.

My music collection. Irreplacable Vinyls and cheap bootlegged CDs.

Followed closely by my Book collection.

Then my Playstation.

Then my family i s’pose.

My collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber cast CDS. Incredible collection. My two favorites are my 1988 Japanese Phantom of the Opera. This was only sold in the theatre in Japan for a month. You cannot find this CD. I got it in a used CD bin for $75!!!

And my Russian Jesus Christ Superstar. I got it from a Russian Web person, the fifth one I contacted about getting the CD.

My Swiss Army Knife.
It’s a Victorinox (of course- Wengers are evil), the Spartan.(The one with the big and little blades, the screwdriver, can opener, bottle opener, awl and the cork screw) This is the first “grown-up” thing I bought. I ran all over town trying to find a good SAK to replace the old Boy Scout knife I lost. I carry it everywhere. People who know me don’t ask if I have it, they just say “gimme your Army knife”. Mostly to open boxes and birthday presents. I’ve had it for 14 years now. I’m more likely to leave the house without my watch than my SAK.

It would have to be my computer. After all, it was the first “big” purchase I made when I started work, and I saved up damn hard to buy it. I’ve met some very special friends while surfing on this PC, so it almost feels part of me now. How geeky!

Other than that, I would also have to grab my Dr Martens boots. I just will not wear anything else on my feet, ever. They’re really comfortable, and I think they look great. I have a spare pair still in the box, given to me by my best friend, and I still can’t bear to unwrap them for fear of spoiling them. So, there’s no way I’d leave them to burn.
