Your favorite Richard Thompson song

King of Bohemia
I played and sang it at my great friend’s funeral. He committed suicide. I haven’t listened to it since, but I don’t have to. I slightly changed the lyric to have a more hopeful slant.

'Did your dreams die young? Were they too hard won?
Did you reach too high and fall?
And is there no rest for the ones God Blessed,
and he blessed you best of all."

It was 16 years ago and hard to do.

I’ve been listening to Thompson a lot lately. I took my kids to see him at the Pittsburgh 3 Rivers Arts festival in June (power trio show) and was blown away by his “Guitar Heroes” song. Amazing how he can just change styles mid-song.

It’s so hard to name a favorite, but I usually lean toward “Cooksferry Queen.” Of course there is always Beeswing, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, Wall of Death, Bathsheba Smiles, Man in Need, Dad’s Gonna Kill Me, and Tear Stained Letter. I also find myself fascinated by songs that he doesn’t seem to play live like Guns are the Tongues, A Love you Can’t Survive, and Needle and Thread.
