I am not asking for the inevitable posts about how radio sucks and you don’t listen to it. If you don’t listen to the radio you shouldn’t be posting about your favorite radio song then. Some of us don’t have much choice at work and have to listen to the radio 8 hours at a shot.
Oh yeah, no classic rock or any of that. I am asking about new stuff.
Anyway, IMHO the 2 best songs on current rock stations are Fine Again by Seether and Not Falling by Mudvayne. Both are good songs and I have really dug mudvayne for a few years now.
I don’t listen to R+B or easy listening so I can’t comment on those. I do like the guitar track for the new 2-Pac song, Thugz Mansion, although it is obvious he didn’t rap over those guitars it still sounds good.
Oh, and as far as my favorite post-2000 song, I can’t think of anything in particular, and I’m sure my favorite is waiting until I post something else before it springs to mind, but lately I’ve been enjoying the Wallflowers’ new releases.
“Don’t Know Why” by Nora Jones. It’s reminiscent of a time before R&B sucked ass. If that can make a significant dent in the Top 40 world, we yet be saved culturally.
Being an Aussie… there are some real jewells which have been made down here which you fellow dopers overseas might not have heard about…
If you’re into file downloads… check these ones out BIG TIME!
Powderfinger - “My Happiness”
Lo-Tel - “Teenager of the Year”
The Androids - “I’d rather do it with Madonna”
Grinspoon - “Chemical Heart”
All of these tunes are genuinely world class rock/pop songs which cross that boundary of having a memorable chorus mixed with integrity of performance. And they got huge radio airplay down here.
bluecanary - Lo-tel play eighties influenced pop. Loads of vintage synths, pretty melodies. Not very pun, though. However, on their new EP, US punk band The Ataris do a stripped-back acoustic cover of the song.
The Androids song is fairly middle of the road pop-rock. Again, not very punk. I’m not a huge fan of it (frankly I find it a bit annoying). However, BBF’s assessment is correct - it’s legitimate radio rock and had it been released by a US band it would be all over MTV.
The Grinspoon and Powderfinger songs are great, and I’d recommend them to anyone who likes good radio rock (Foo Fighters, U2 etc).
I think that from this end of the world, Shihad er… sorry Pacifier deserve to be mentioned, as do Motorace, George and Jebediah, although as is usually the case with radio rock, they aren’t doing the best or most interesting things in music, but what they are doing, they do it very well.
