I post a lot to Instagram stories with music and it looks like this is going to be yet another long cold snowy winter. What are some of your favorite songs about ornthar mention snow/ice/cold/winter? They don’t have to be in the pop/rock genre either. Today I’m using the Skating theme from A Charlie Brown Christmas, for example. I used Snowblind by Styx and Snowman by Genesis earlier.
Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” is the GOAT.
Let’s start with Waldteufel’s Les Patineurs (The Skaters) usually known as The Skater’s Waltz:
I’m not very imaginative, I’m torn between ‘Walking in a Winter Wonderland’ and ‘Let It Snow Let It Snow Let It Snow’…
Non- Christmas: torn between’Hazy Shade of Winter’/ ‘California Dreaming’
“Winter Wonderland” and “Let It Snow” don’t say anything about Christmas; they just get played a lot around Christmastime. So they’re perfectly good choices.
My choices are on our Winter playlist.
To actually answer your OP, I can think of a few songs (I mostly listen to classic rock, so that’s what I’m familiar with) that mention snow / ice / winder / cold:
Cold as Ice, Foreigner.
Snowblind, Styx (I see you already have that one)
Wintertime Love, The Doors
Winter, Rolling Stones
Those are the ones I can think offhand.
However, for me personally, there’s certain songs and music that associate with winter and therefore are part of my winter playlist. There are not necessarily Christmas songs (although many are), but rather emotionally “winter” songs.
The entire Nutcracker ballet
California Dreamin’, The Mamas and the Papas
(Aside: I saw a movie on TV when I was a teenager where a group of explorers or similar adventures were lost in some dark jungle, and so they started singing that song. Ever since then I’ve tried to figure out what movie that was, but no dice.)
White Wine in the Sun, Kate Miller-Heidke. This song has a sort of Weird Al vibe to it, but the second half is sweet and charming, and reminds me why I put up with all the stupid family drama each Christmas season.
The River, Joni Mitchell
Hallelujah, originally by Leonard Cohen, has been covered about a zillion times. By far the best version I’ve found is this one performed by a children’s choir. The “lead” singer (is that the right word?) is a 10-year-old girl with autism. One of the most beautiful songs ever, and this is by far the most striking rendition I’ve ever heard. Jeff Buckley and John Cale also did good covers.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot.
One of the best of these is Simon and Garfunkel’s A Hazy Shade of Winter.
ETA: I see this was already mentioned by saliqmind
Snow is cold, rain is wet
Chills my soul right to the marrow
Back Home Again by Carole King
Winter - Tori Amos
*December Will Be Magic Again *- Kate Bush
How To Bring A Blush To The Snow (and, in fact, the entire Victorialand album) - Cocteau Twins
I love “Sleigh Ride.” It’s such a joyful celebration of winter weather!
Ah, heck, may as well give links to some of these here in this thread:
This.
So cold, music not helping.
Factice Factory - Cold (The Cure)
Warsaw - Living In The Ice Age
Oneiroid Psychosis - Winter Day
link is a good rendition by Susan Boyle
I don’t like much popular music particularly if it is in English (lyrics usually nauseatingly stupid) so I am not going to add much to the thread I guess.
Ya beat me to it. A beautiful song.
Surprised no one has mentioned Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow by Frank Zappa.
Simon and Garfunkel
A winter’s day
In a deep and dark
December
I am alone
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow
Here’s an entire album about Eskimos.
Jimmy Buffett’s “Boat Drinks”.
