Your favorite Stevie Wonder single

DesertRoomie and I got to talking about Stevie Wonder and she asked how long he’d been performing. I said since 1963 at age 12 with Fingertips, pt. 2 – forty-five years. (Turns out there were a couple the year before that, but I’ve never heard them – Discography. ) Anyway, she didn’t recall it so I dug up a copy on Youtube and it came back to her.

Unfortunately, Superstition (Youtube warning) came up in the related videos column, I clicked on it, and now I got this earworm. It’s okay, though because it’s my favoritest S W tune – who can resist that klavinet hook?*

But that’s just my opinion. What’s your favorite single Mr. Wonder has done?
*I especially love the little girl in red at 0:38 and again at 4:10 I wonder where she is today.

Master Blaster.

Sixties: “I Was Made to Love Her.”

Post-sixties: “Living for the City.”

upbeat: “I Wish”

mellow: “My Cherie Amour” (Although my French teacher said that was bad grammar.)

Incidentally, Stevie Wonder is playing in Reno tonite at one of the casinos.

Me, I go for the classics.

“Fingertips, Pt 2”, “I Was Made To Love Her”, & “Ma Cherie Amour” from the early days; “Sir Duke” and “Boogie On Reggae Woman” from the later years.

“I Just Called To Say I Love You” was my first thought, although there are many that are my faves.

60s: A Place in the Sun & For Once in My Life
70s: I Wish & Boogie On Reggae Woman
I seriously can’t pick one favorite.

Higher Ground. I’m kicking myself for not being home in Chicago. Apart from wanting to spend the holiday with my sweetie, Stevie played Taste of Chicago.

Hmm… close call.

“Higher Ground” is right up there.

“Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” is second.

But “Superstition” wins. And it’s WAY better than the Beck, Bogert & Appice version (which actually came first).

“For Once In My Life” is one of my favorite songs ever. So it stands to reason that it’d be my favorite Stevie song

“Uptight” (Baby, everything is all right, uptight, out of sight) is my favorite of many excellent Stevie Wonder songs.

My favorite is As. But a close second is I Wish.

“Superstition” has already been mentioned so I’ll pick an underrated lesser-known song from his early period, “I Don’t Know Why”. Also, I like the righteous anger of"You Haven’t Done Nothing". It was written about Tricky Dick but it could just as well apply to the current occupant of the White House.

#1 Superstition

#2 Fingertips (IIRC, it consisted of pts. 1 & 2.)

#3 Higher Ground

#4 Living for the City

“You Are the Sunshine of My Life”

Pastime Paradise

I tried to meet my son at the Taste to see Stevie, but I missed the train. TWICE. I guess it wasn’t meant to be this time. He said it was a great show.

high-fives astorian, since I thought I was the only person on the planet who remembered BB&A. That was a great freakin’ album. [/OT]

The only one of his albums I’ve bought on CD is Innervisions, and from that I’d pick “Don’t You Worry About a Thing.”

All-time: “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.”

Will, in curmudgeonly fashion, single out “I Just Called to Say I Love You” as a song I would gladly nuke from orbit as intolerably sappy and unworthy of Mr. Wonder’s considerable talents.

That Girl

Now I’m gonna have to go dig our Original Musiquarium for this evening’s party and it’s all your fault!

  • side note - that’s one of the neatest things about having kids, introducing them to good music. I loved watching my son catch Seal’s beat on Crazy last summer; he picked up on Brick House two years ago. Time to put the focus on Little Stevie.

“As”
“That Girl”
“Living Just Enough for the City”
