Anyone else remember that wacky British sitcom that used to be shown on MTV late at night called “The Young Ones”? I’m always surprised at the people I run across who still remember that show and can quote dialogue from it.
Anyway, I recently discovered one of my coworkers is a fan too and we debated which of the guys was our favorite. I admitted that Neil used to be my favorite - I still can’t eat lentils without thinking of him - but as I grow older I’m becoming much fonder of Vivian. I like his whole philosophy of life.
just ordered 6 episodes on VHS and they should arrive today.
didnt really like any of them over another. they all had their place. vyvian was the maniac but everyone was afraid of mike weren’t they? he was just about a midget but everyone feared him as I remember. dont know why.
did you see the scene where they had switched characters?
funniest scene: the elephant man
orderly:
“dr. I have with me the worst case of _____ I have ever seen.”
dr:
“thats an elephant!”
orderly:
“you insensitive bastard”
oh and the pig ferret skit.
Ok vyvian is my favorite. come to think of it.
Favorite character, Neil’s mother. “Why can’t you boys do nice clean comedy, like The Good Life?” Leading of course to the finest rant Vyvyan ever delivered.
I really enjoyed all of the boys but my personal fave “Young Ones” skit was when Alexi gave the benefit show in the living room and Neil was the only spectator. Still cracks me up to this day.
I’d have to agree with ** bafaa **, they were all hilarious in different ways, with the exception of Mike. His character just never seemed to fit. That being said, he did deliver what was for me the absolutely funniest line ever on the show.
Mike: Neil, it is very rare you interest me, but today you have. Why do you keep coming in here, carrying a cake, and saying surprise?
Neil: It’s my birthday.
Mike: Now you knew that anyway, and we don’t care, so where’s the surprise?
I don’t know why, but that line had me rolling on the floor the first time I saw it on MTV, and it still cracks me up.
“Harry the Bastard” was my fave episode, Alexie Sayle as the video rental man terrifying the trio into failing to return a scary video on time and so pay an overtime penalty.
Neil - Vyvyan, it doesn’t say anything about pouring honey in the works of the video recorder in this handbook.
Vyvyan - I know Neil, but it doesn’t say anything about not pouring honey into the video either.
