When I ordered one at a “family restaurant” in Wisconsin it didn’t come with any vegetables, just a side of mashed potatoes. My sister’s comment was “What does Wisconsin have against vegetables?”

In Wisconsin, “vegetables” translates as “cheese and beer.”

Like I said, only if you understand what “chili size” means. What you describe is totally unknown in Canada. Though it sounds quite tasty! Love to try one sometime.

Hot open-faced sandwiches (beef, turkey, pork tenderloin, etc.) are common at the diner/family restaurants here in the Chicago area, too, at least. Meat on white bread, covered in gravy, and definitely a knife-and-fork meal.

I’ve seen them all over L.A., as well.

And any burger place with a variety of burger styles here will have a chiliburger. My favorite was the late lamented Mago’s Avocado Chili Cheese Burger. Best hangover food, ever!

Beans. Gotta have beans. Chili without beans, on a burger or not, just ain’t chili. It’s like chicken noodle soup without the noodles.

My diner top 5:

1. Chili burger (or if I’m in So Cal again, chili size, I guess)
2. Hot turkey sandwich
3. Biscuits and gravy with 2-3 runny yolk eggs
4. Huevos rancheros (could compete for 1 depending where I am)
5. French dip (not that I super duper like them, but they’re hard to screw up)

Biscuits and gravy with 2-3 runny yolk eggs

I was once hitchhiking through Wisconsin in the dead of winter and wound up at a diner outside the Dells. The only thing I could afford was hot coffee and a plate of biscuits with sausage gravy.

That was one of the best meals I’ve ever had!

I’m confused. Why does Crazy Otto’s, “the
only worthwhile diner chain in north la County” have chili burgers, or “Chiliburger” as it’s listed, on the menu, and ne’er a chili size in sight?

Oh well, Crazy Otto’s Chiliburger sounds pretty good. The only downside is you hafta wait til after 10 AM to order one.
