Your favourite flavour/colour of sweets/gums

I have a WAtheory, but more of that in a moment…

You’re presented with a selection of fruit flavoured sweets which, for the sake of this experiment, consists of one of each of:
Orange (Orange)
Strawberry (Red)
Raspberry (Pink)
Lemon (Yellow)
Lime (Green)
Blackcurrant (Black/Purple)
Grapefruit (White)

Please select two of them starting with your favourite.

Mine would be Blackcurrant and Strawberry, and in any selection of sweets, I will always favour the purple/black or red colours first, even if purple happens to be grape and red happens to be cherry (or whatever).

So I’m selecting mainly on the basis of colour, is this what you do?

I started to entertain the idea that maybe there’s some sort of local environmental influence involved (in the particular part of the world where I come from, most of the wild edible fruits are either black or red, so I wondered if maybe someone from a place where the local wild fruits are predominantly, say, orange (even though they aren’t actually oranges) would tend to pick the orange sweets first.

Any thoughts on this?

I always eat candy in the reverse order, saving my favorite for last.

I would eat green and yellow first, because I don’t like those colors.

With your list I would have a real quandry. I would have a hard time picking between pink and red. Pink is my favorite color, but strawberry is my favorite flavor.

Also in your example you list one color as purple/black. I would eat purple just before I ate pink/red, because I like “purple” flavors. I would not eat black at all.

You may be onto something with your theory, but my choices have always been heavily influenced by my favorite colors.

Usually go for the Green and Yellow (my 2 choices), then orange–they tend to be citrus flavours, my favourites. If there are more unusual flavours like cinnamon (red) or grapefruit (pink or white) then those as well. I get round to the berry flavours eventually.

I always go for red first. Srawberry or cherry, it’s all good. Then I go for green, as I dig lime. Everything else comes after, in no particular order.

Get all of the non-citrus or non-berry flavors out of the way first. Then intersperse the lower order citrus (non-lime) with the berries for pallate cleansers awaiting all that tasty lime goodness as the grand finale. With lime at the top of the chart, I work my way up these favorite flavors. Incidentally, Rowntree’s fruit gums* kick some serious @ss.

*Not chewing gum but a splendid hard gelatin pastille.

I see I’ve been guilty of yet another Anglo-American mistranslation; ‘gums’ in the UK are usually semi-hard fruit flavoured jelly sweets, chewing gum is ‘chewing gum’

Orange is the best flavor of any candy. And, yes, orange M&Ms are superior (even though they taste like the others).

Now that’s interesting, not sure if Smarties are common over there in the US (they aren’t the same as this (we call those ‘fizzers’)), but anyway, the orange smarties have an orange flavoured shell (or maybe it’s the chocolate), but the others are all the same (i.e. the green shelled ones aren’t mint-choc).

Everyone else says football, we say soccer. Everyone else says Smarties, we say, um, something else.

I’d start with the red first. Red is usually safe. Cinnamon (yum) or cherry (OK, but less yum). Your red candy would be strawberry. If I didn’t catch the smell this would get a big “ick” and then I wouldn’t eat any more. The yellow-green-orange group would be my next choice. They all are pretty safe. If the Blackcurrant was more purple than black it might get bumped up on the “to try” list. Purple generally = grape, but I’ve never had a blackcurrant candy. Black is almost always bad news- black= licorice (ick). White is also another “bad” color. Occasionally it’s pineaple, which is OK. Grapefruit, not so much.

Mangetout, why would you call them “fizzers”? Do they fizz for you? We do have some candies that fizz (Zott’s, where the fizz is.), but these ain’t one of them.

Ah, maybe they aren’t the same then, they look like UK fizzers, which are little sherbert tablets, which do fizz in the mouth.

I tend to be weird about this (or maybe you all are weird, and I’m normal…). I usually split the different candies into their own color coded groups. Then, I eat all the surplus candies until I have the same number in each group (unless one group only has like 1 or 2, then I just eat that). Then, I take one of each color and eat those together, unless they are Skittles, in which case I usually eat the red and orange ones first, or M&Ms, where it doesn’t really matter since they’re all chocolate (no, they don’t taste different even if the shells are different colors). Smarties are eaten one by one, and all other fruity candies are eaten as above.

As for the question at hand, red comes first (except jelly beans, cause they might be cinnamon…im not a fan), then orange, then lemon and lime, then whatever else is left.

I’m hungry.

Orange, then yellow. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

And green apple can kiss my lily white…knees.
