Your Favourite Retro Video Game (Best For its Time)

Loved Wing Commander, probably spent about as much time playing it as I did Aces of the Deep. I also played Wing Commander:Privateer a lot. Though I never went in for the main story line of that one.

Haven’t played LOTRO in a while but last played on Arkenstone (after Windfola closed down).

Space Wars

Arcade game, sim. To Pong

Dungeon Master was another favorite of mine back in the day. I still recall how one creature (apparently officially called an “Oitu”) got the family nickname Critter because that’s what my mother called them when she saw them. And I liked the feel of casting spells by linking magical symbols together.

The King’s Field games, or rather the ones released in America. Most never made it out of Japan, apparently. One detail I liked was that just about every place and object in the game had lore for itself that you could use a magic mirror to find out. Also the large labyrinths full of traps were fun to explore. And the music was good.

Jane’s USAF and DiD F-22 ADF fighter jet games in the 1990s. IMHO, F-22 ADF still beats nearly any fighter jet flight sim today in terms of its simplicity, AWACS gameplay, intuitiveness, and realism for its time.

Heh, I did the opposite. I kept the realism on 100%, and did the normal gaming thing of returning to my last save point each time I was sunk. When I reached April 1945, I tried to be stingy, and stay out on patrol until May 8th. But I found a convoy on sonar, and so I tracked and attacked them. I screwed up while tangling with 3 escort vessels, and after I sank two, the thrid sank me on April 17th, Apparently when you’re sunk that late in the war, you get a freebie. I was awarded with a cinematic scene of my sub pulling into what appears to be Bergen, Norway (my last home port), with no oom-pah band or any greeters at all. Then you get a screen with a nice letter from Donitz saying you’ve done great, your next orders will come from the Allied Command.

Oh, I am so happy to be done with this time sink of a game.

Still a fan of Angry Birds.
