I like Barry Manilow, Tom Jones, and John Tesh, both as performers and as fantasy lust objects.
I’ll see your Matthew Reilly and raise you a James Rollins, some Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, and a handful of “intrepid submarine commander is the last hope of America.”
Any of that sort of crap will keep me quiet and out of trouble for a whole weekend.
I’m pretty much a literature snob, because books are such an investment of time and concentration that I don’t want to waste it reading crap. But I’ve got plenty of movie and music guilty pleasures. Couple off the top of my head:
I really liked Adventures In Babysitting. And was surprised that I enjoyed Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.
Music: “MyBabyDaddy” byB-Rock & The Bizz, “Steal My Sunshine” by Len, “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, “Toxic” by Britney, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin, quite a few Rush songs (although I loathe prog/classic rock in general), “Drifter” by Iron Maiden (ditto heavy metal), “You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates, too many others to mention…
Hello, my name is Baker…
Hi Baker!
…and I r-r-r-r-r-ead B-B-Barbara Cartland novels.
Holy crap, Baker, that’s pretty hardcore!
I read those “sassy career girl” romances with the faux sex scenes and suchlike–Anna Maxted’s the most typical of the genre I can think of offhand.
Apparently my fondness for ICP ought to be a guilty pleasure, but I do not apologize for my juggalo tendencies.
Laurell Hamilton. What the fuck is WRONG with me?
Zombie movies. ANY zombie movie. Can’t stop myself even when I know they’re gonna suck like a heroin whore.
Taco Hell Sleazy Gordita Crunches. I feel so… dirty… every time I give in and eat these things.
Stoner comedies–Cheech & Chong, Harold and Kumar, Dude Where’s My Car, the lot. The stupider the better. I’ll watch them over and over again. It’s a sickness.
Little Debbie cakes. I really don’t want to talk about this.
I listen to a really unbelievable amount of surf music. Everyone I know is baffled by this and thinks I’m deranged. I, however, care not a whit for their disdain! Time will prove me right, dammit!
Oh, seconded! Are these really guilty pleasures, though? Everyone I’ve run into seems to love them too.
I’m a huge fan of The Whitest Kids You Know. This is my favorite sketch.
And–sigh–The Cat in the Hat.
Anyone else love Joe Dirt? I’ll watch anything with David Spade (with or without Chris Farley).
And Adam Sandler.
I may have to look those up. I’ve got a Patrick Robinson book on CD in my car. It’s ludicrous, but it eats the time!
I love to watch Ghost Hunters! oh wait - I am NOT ashamed of that one…
I’ve also become glued to:
A Haunting
Family Jewels
Still Standing
Reba
Samuria Jack & Invader Zim (should I be embarassed?)
Movies:
Bridget Jones Diary (and I’m waiting for the 3rd, dagnabbit!)
Starship Troopers
Scary Movie(s)
I also like showtunes - especially from plays. My favorite is Once in Love with Amy from the play Where’s Charlie?
Undead and… by Mary Janice Davidson. I’m waiting for book 6 to come out in paperback. I’d call it beach reading if I ever went to the beach. Silly, and pure fluff, but they make me laugh.
And when I got out my new turntable to start putting the vinyl on computer, I rediscovered just how big a Neil Diamond fan I am. I don’t care, nobody’s ever here, so I just sing along.
Current musical guilty pleasure: “Love in This Club” by Usher featuring Young Jeezy. (I know, I still can’t believe I’m listening to a guy called Young Jeezy.)
Haven’t seen any movies lately. As for reading, I’m catching up on my stack of Vanity Fair magazines on the bus home, plus I just discovered a manga called R.O.D. (Read or Die). I swear I haven’t met the author, because the main character, Yomiko Readman, is like a Japanese version of me, except I don’t get quite as excited, and I mean really excited, about books as she does.
My TV guilty pleasure continues to be Naruto. I know it’s geared toward boys one-third my age, but who cares? I’m still watching, even though Cartoon Network is currently broadcasting the infamous “filler” episodes. Anyone who doesn’t like it, bite me.
Hey, HEEEEYYY!!! Invader Zim is NOT a guilty pleasure! It’s one of the highest caliber, IMNSHO. As is his predecessor, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.
Yeah, thirded. In fact, I’m reading Sandstorm right now. For an atheist, I’m very into the DaVinci Codey stuff.
I’ve had Phil Collins’ “Easy Lover” on repeat on my ipod all morning. If anyone else (besides y’all) knew what I was listening to…oy.
To my eternal embarrassment, I’m hooked on the Anita Blake books. I will buy the new one in hardback when it comes out in June.
I love MaryJanice Davidson, too. And Janet Evanovich.
I’ll watch almost any sci-fi movie that isn’t pure horror. A bad movie with spaceships/time travel/aliens is better than a bad movie without those things.
I can’t believe I’m actually admitting this, but please don’t judge me too harshly!
Movies: Roadhouse, Con Air and Staying Alive. :o
Music: addicted 70’s cheesy music
Books: Maeve Binchy
There I said it
I’ll admit it. For all the high end stuff I read, watch and listen to (Hemingway, Citizen Kane and Mozart) I also have my overwhelming collection of crap. My wife went through my iPod to look for songs she might want on her player and said, “I can understand Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin but why the hell do you have Billy, Don’t Be a Hero and The Night Chicago Died?”
I read Tom Clancy and other jingoistic kick-ass anti-terrorist books as well as Dan Brown type books (passes the time and isn’t taxing on the brain during long commuter train rides). I love unrealistic disaster movies like Day After Tomorrow or Volcano simply because they are so stupidly plotted and acted but again don’t force me to think.
My excuse is that I spend my work days troubleshooting proprietary software issues involving security, transmissions, database access and cross platform compatibilities and my brain needs a break. I need mental cotton candy to decompress. On the weekends I’ll read Dickens, listen to Beethoven and go to see Shakespeare in the park. During the week I want Clive Cussler, Abba and The Poseidon Adventure.
Music: I like disco–at least the stuff from the 70s and early 80s (no idea if anyone is still producing it). I also like Barry Manilow.
TV: The old “Swamp Thing” series is my guilty pleasure. It was so bad, but I loved it. I also still tend to watch “The Brady Bunch” more than I should.
Movies: “The Manitou,” which was an extremely cheesy '70s horror movie about a vengeful Native American spirit, starring Tony Curtis as a schlock psychic. Nobody’s heard of it, but the book it was based on (by Graham Masterton) is a little less guilty than the movie.
I also love “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” but I don’t really consider that *too *much of a guilty pleasure.
A Few Good Men.
Every time I see it on TV I must watch it through to the end. No matter what point in the movie I stumble on it. I don’t know why though.
Me too and I also think that Squidward,my favourite character,is almost certainly a Doper too.
