Your film, TV, reading and music guilty pleasures - fess up here!

TV - Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels, Wife Swap, and various court shows (love those red-headed beyotches).

Film - John Hughes’ teen flicks.

Reading - Finally broke down and subscribed to People. Although I consider that research, since some day when my kids are teenagers I may actually need to know who these celebrities are.

Well, I’ll ask! What did you think?

For my part, I thought it was too long, repetitive, and smacked of taking two stories (1. a serial killer; 2. an exhibition) and marrying them when they didn’t really go together. I thought it would have been better if he had written two separate books or, even better, two journal articles for something like Smithsonian.

But I definitely want to hear other opinions. What’s yours?

True Romance
Tarantino fans don’t like because he didn’t direct it.
Non-Tarintino fans don’t like it because it is so Tarantino.
Patricia, why did you have to go new age?

Well, since you ask  I did like it. It’s true the two topics didn’t really belong together, but I think it gave you a broader picture of real life at that time. For instance, on the one hand, you’re thinking, “Oh, those quaint old-timey people, getting a big bang out of a ride on the Ferris wheel”, but on the other hand, one of those quaint old timers was shutting people up in an airtight room and listening to them die.

Another thing I liked was all the little tidbits of interesting information sprinkled throughout, like how that one guy just whipped out that little “there’s a place in France” ditty on the spur of the moment, and what a shame he never got any royalties.

One thing I didn’t like was all the harping on how there wasn’t enough time to get the Fair built. It was getting me all stressed. (Of course, I’ve been known to get all wound up watching an episode of Three’s Company, but still! I worry.)

Two journal articles? Yeah, I could go with that.

This thread PROVES that Illuminatiprimus really is a Satanist. Noone else could ask such an evil question…

Pron does not appeal to me, 'cause the chicks in Elfquest and Girl Genius and…gulp…Disney animated movies are just too unbeatably hot…some manga, too…

And I really like Petula Clark.

And almost any movie that features major world destruction (though I do demand the special effects be good, so that’s my excuse).

So, Dr. Fidelius, Darth Sensitive, do you have any H. Jay Riker or Ian Douglas in your collections? If not, I may be able to arrange for you to try them.

My guilty pleasures are Judge Judy and The People’s Court. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because it’s proof that there are people who are a heck of a lot worse off than I am.

I also like cheesy, medieval-style movies like A Knight’s Tale, the 1993 version of The Three Musketeers with Tim Curry chewing up scenery as Cardinal Richelieu and Ladyhawke.

I love America’s Next Top Model. You can take me on my most depressed day, give me this show, and it will make me ready to take on the world. I think it is a truly fascinating and nuanced study about the way people defeat themselves in the face of hardship – and the way they overcome self-defeat to achieve their dreams. Tyra is sooo inspiring. There I said it.

I also love Oprah, have watched her show since I was a little girl. I think she’s a brilliant and inspiring leader and her program usually makes me cry.

When it comes to music, I am really guilty. I listen to country music – I’m aware country music is the status quo in certain circles, but where I grew up it was totally uncool. I like the stuff from the 80s and early 90s… Randy Travis, George Strait, Garth Brooks… hey, at least I stick with the greats. I still can’t listen to my country albums with the car windows rolled down–I’m too embarrassed someone might hear. It really messes with the hard-core image I like to perpetuate.

I think Linkn Park and My Chemical Romance are brilliant.

And the truest guilty pleasure… I am a really very agnostic person, but I used to be a Christian teen who regularly listened to Christian rock. Sometimes, when nobody is around, I’ll pull out my old DC Talk, Jars of Clay or Newsboys album and take a trip down memory lane.

I submit that, regardless of one’s personal religious beliefs, it’s humanly impossible to maintain any sort of dignity while singing aloud the following:

If I’m surfing and come across Judge Hatchett, I’ll watch for a few minutes. She is just smokin’ hot IMO. I’d like to see her in chambers!

I’ve made peace with a lot of things musically. Some Carpenters, some Barry Manilow…

Once in awhile I’ll throw in my DVD of “Red Dawn.”

Olivesmarch4th - is Linkin Park a guilty pleasure? I think they’re pretty rock and roll myself.

And The Them I’m lovely really, Satanist though I may be.

Ill, have you ever done an Ask the Satanist thread? nudge nudge

I read every Dean Koontz book - in hardback. I love Ghost Hunters and Lisa Williams. And I like Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow.

Reading: James Patterson paperbacks. The chapters are like two pages long, so it gives you the feeling you’re really tearing through it. They’re like palate cleansers.

Film: Hm. Nothing really guilty here. I like what I like. Even though it includes movies like Shark Attack, which was purchased at the height of a Casper Van Dien obsession.

TV: Reruns of Beverly Hills, 90210 on SoapNet. When I discovered we had the channel with our new cable package, I was ecstatic. Those crazy wedding shows on Style and whatnot: Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?, Platinum Weddings, Destination Wedding. VH1 list shows (The Fabulous Life of …, any crappy celebrity countdown). Three Sheets on MOJO.

Music: “The Warrior” by Patty Smyth and Scandal. “Loverboy” by Billy Ocean. “Oh Sherrie” by Steve Perry. “Twist of Fate” by Olivia Newton-John. All of which I’ve heard and repeated in the last two days.

I like disco and I’m not ashamed by it. Actually, I don’t really feel guilt about anything I do. I like hair metal, bubblegum pop, Golden Age comics (mmmm, crack…), Jem and the Holograms, and Silverhawks. Judge me as you will.

I judge you a kindred spirit.

Well, except for the comics and Silverhawks…these are probably things I should investigate.

Reading? The books I read aren’t guilty pleasures. Magazines however…I’ll admit to perusing US weekly now and again. I particularly like the fashion stuff like "who wears it better?"or Red Carpet rundown. Alas, as I become a woman of a certain age I don’t know who 75% of the people in the magazine even are, so guilty or otherwise it’s not as pleasurable.

Watching? TV is kinda the same as books. Although I guess I should list Grey’s Anatomy as a guilty pleasure. I started watching when I thought it was good, but I’ll keep watching to see how bad it can get. I have too many guilty pleasure movies to list them all. Cobra, Robocop, Under Siege, Point Break, Face/Off, ConAir, and almost anything with a dance, music, or cheering competition; Drumline, Bring It On (any of 'em), Stomp the Yard, Save the Last Dance…I gotta stop. We’d be here for days. I do watch good mivies too (well, I think they’re good. Anyway I do watch some I’d be less embarassed to bring up in conversation at a cocktail party)

I listen to almost all types of music. None of it makes me feel guilty or embarassed. Napster’s “customized” playlists based on what I’ve searched for are pretty bizarre.

Huh…I was jsut editing for spelling ans then I remembered that my TV guilty pleasure is Intervention. I generally disregard reality TV because at it’s core it is about people humiliating themselves. It makes me physically uncomfortable. Except Intervention. Well, I do get a little uneasy watching, but watch I do. I watch it twice on Mondays and other times on On Demand. I read followups on the A&E website. I’m hooked. I think next season I’ll be ON the show with Ken Seeley in a hotel meeting room telling me my family wants me to stop watching…

I’ve thought about it but not done one yet, but if I’ve got at least an audience of one I might just do one.

If you enjoy your brain being in one piece, you may not want to.
