Good morning, all! As it turns out, that was not the snooze button I mashed this morning, so no walking, which was fortunate. According to Spike as he came home, it was pouring out there. Mrs Magill is on the road now. She should be home by eight tonight, and then it’s emergency laundry to get her processed to be able to leave tomorrow morning. I’m doing Squeaky’s emergency laundry now.
I had a game night with my friends last night. We played El Grande. It was fun. Somehow, I came in second.
I got off the phone with Mrs Magill about an hour ago. She gassed up on base after she and Fang did a little guided tour as she followed him to his work. As I was hanging up, I told her, “Have a safe drive. I love you. Bye.” She responded with an “Love you, too. Bye!” It’s been a while since she’s said that. My relief is palpable.
In other news: I’m getting my new hair today! I’m excited.
Hey, man. You do you. I would never yuck your yum.
The new moon rarely rises at midnight. Oh wait, you weren’t giving the pass phrase? Never mind.
Oh - jealous. I love roadsters - alas, the electric ones were either too expensive or have shit for range.
I overslept this morning, but now I’ve had my first big mug of coffee. I’m mostly awake, and I’m mostly thinking. More coffee!
I woke up too late to hear On The Media. No, I didn’t. (smacks forehead) It’s Friday. OTM is on Saturday. Science Friday will be on this afternoon, though.
I am a profoundly silly man, and I always wanted a silly job.
I once embarrassed myself by trying the “brother named Denephew” joke on a lady named Deniece. Every Deniece has heard, and hates, that joke. If I ever meet another Deniece, I will turn the joke on its head by asking if she has a brother named Sidney.
Poor Buster! I hope that he’s feeling better soonest, taters.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. The big thing on the agenda today is mopping my apartment. Not just the weekly steam mop, but the monthly bucket one. Joy!
My childhood home was on a corner lot on a small hill. My mom, she of the greenest thumb I know, planted all sorts of flowers on that hill - so much so that neighbors would come take their Easter photos there. But the latest Streetview shows just grass…
I feel invisible when I’m sitting low. Yeah, I know the cars around me can (probably) see my vehicle, but in my heart of heart, I know they’ll run over me. Which is why I loved my Aerostar so much!!
I have emptied the freezer into 2 coolers and I’ve got it open with a fan blowing in. The automatic defrost has been wonky, so I’m hoping if I start from dry, all will be well. And I’ve pretty much talked myself out of a new fridge for now. I just can’t justify $2K when there are other, more pressing needs. So we’ll see how it all goes.
OK, Alexa just told me my first load of laundry is done - off to the basement!!!
taters I’m with you on not being able to see around vehicles. Hubs had some 1980 GM vehicle that was small and close to the ground. I hated that. During the early '90’s he had a GMC Jimmy and I loved driving that and grew to appreciate being able to see what was going on ahead of other vehicles. I bought a '94 Explorer off the B lot in 1995 (Ford exec had used for a year) and had that until 2014; it was a great vehicle! Used it to sleep in the back when I took daughter to swim practice at 5:30am 15 miles away. Then we schlepped her belongings back and forth to college and then to Lowell, MA where she interned then to Chicago where she went to grad school.
rocker my friend’s parents were both born in Macedonia, now unfortunately called North Macedonia, so they attend the Greek Orthodox church.
Back from Kroger. All groceries put away. I appreciated learning about used meat from FCM; forgot to look there today. But on occasion I check out the used baked goods. Hubs loves apple pie. I love pie with a dutch topping. I scored a Toffee Apple pie that has a dutch apple with toffee topping for less than half price since it was sell by 7/11 so we’ll both enioy it.
The recycling had been picked up so I rolled the big bin back to where it sits.
If it makes you feel better, it’s one of the favourite jokes of a friend of mine. Problem is, English is his 3rd language and as the name Denise is pretty uncommon nowadays around here, he keeps mixing it up and saying ‘Theniece’ instead.
I got an ‘out of brain’ error, so I’m calling it quits a bit early today, as it’s firday and I was at a natural stopping point in the writing.
It was a short day today. Good thing, because J called in, so I was on the 300 slide. A lot of work, the heat index was 90 degrees outside, and the one fan put out as much air as a dude doing autoerotic asphyxiation. also, sweating profusely, then rubbing you face on your cat’s head is not recommended. Laundry has commenced, and dry, flavorless bits(with milk and strawberries) have been consumed.
cross disciplinary stacking of advisors, or are you referred to as Nut, EDS, Phd. candidate at the college?
Sounds like a Nine Inch Nails tribute band. Hope they are irking TPTB even more than they are irking you.
My hovercraft is full of eels!
Double yay!
Awww. Hope he feels better.
I’m sure you could go down to the stocks market, and pick one up.
Just finished a Subway sandwich in Napoleon, Ohio. Am ahead of schedule so taking the back roads through Ohio rather than the turnpike. Takes a little longer but nice to see the countryside (decided not to visit the Monster Truck museum I passed). Getting cloudy but hopefully will miss any rain. We’ll see.
Did find the house I lived in New Haven, Indiana about 60 years ago…but no pictures, since I could remember the street (Melbourne) but not the number and there were about 4-5 houses like the one I remember nextdoor to each other.
Ok, back on the road to Bowling Green, Fremont, and finally Sandusky. Take care all.
I am at home getting A/C installed when I should be getting work done. But I got a lot done for unpacking into the new house, mostly taking care of all the little things and clutter that’s been driving me insane.
I don’t know if it was the first piece of furniture proper, but this is the one I first remember. When I was 19 I bought an enormous corner desk with a big hutch that I had to assemble myself. I don’t know why I felt I had to have the most elaborate possible desk, but that’s what I got.
This guy friend I had came over to help me put it together. He couldn’t do much except hand me things because he’s not that handy. It took us eleven hours to assemble that desk, but at least I had the best company possible. We worked long into the night, drinking Mt. Dew to stay awake. It was way more fun than you would think.
I thought the guy might have feelings for me, and I was talking to my Mom about it. She said, “Spice, I love you, and I would not spend eleven hours assembling a desk with you. He likes you.”
I’ll give this to Da Jungle - as soon as they were notified that I dropped off the return at the UPS point in CVS, they credited my account. As in, I have to spend it at Da Jungle, but I doubt that will become an issue. I hate Bezos, but there’s the convenience factor…
Since I was at CVS, I picked up FCD’s meds, then drove thru for a McLunch followed by a drive-thru at the credit union for some cash. Since getting home, I’ve folded the first laundry load, put the second in the dryer and the third in the washer. I also put all the freezer stuff back in, slightly better organized than before. And I discovered half a pound of hot dogs and 2 freezer bags of sloppy joes - must remember for future meals.
Guess I should load the dirties in the dishwasher while waiting to swap out laundry.
Yesterday was a rough day at work, not b.c of customers but, ah, internal staffing conflicts. I was up past 4 a.m. fretting, and I think I’ll hafta have a “cigarette chat” with S.M. today.
She normally keeps this stuff somewhat in line, but she was off yesterday - everyone deserves a day off! - but shit got out of hand. There’s a lot, but worst to me is the word “retarded” got used, twice, against someone who’d clocked out and wasn’t there to defend themself, but at least didn’t hear it to their face.
I’ve barely gotten any decent sleep, and what little I’ve eaten in the last coupla days didn’t stay put.
Also … today would have been my husband’s birthday.
EDS? Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome? They would also be insulted to be called a college, 'tis a University, good sir. We have different terminology this side of the pond. Yer a PhD student, none o this multiple stages wi different names stuff.
I’m not actually based at my university, I’m based at a research institute. This is part of the reason for the small supervisor horde, as every organisation involved or pretending to be involved has insisted on their own supervisors. Regarding the rest of the reason, well, let’s just say it’s complicated, the result of a lot of drama, a massive fight (which I mostly won) and I am actually mostly known as the curséd student (I insist on the é).
85F at 1320. Post Covid vax pain is mild for me, more problematic for the wife. I went for exercise this morning, which loosens things up, as well. I am feeling tired, however, which is common after a vax. Just had a second cup of coffee, which I rarely do. Don’t know if I’ll be up for making dinner, though.
Bright Tree yay for Ollie pics! He looks like a very good boy, give him all the pets from me.
Metal Mouse hope you enjoy the amusement park!
Mollie can’t wait to see pics of the new hair, and a hopeful sign from the Mrs. for sure.
Spice Weasel congrats on the new house! And what a cute story about your husband.
Taters I hope you’ll share pics of the yard once you get the planting done - it sounds quite beautiful.
Van Gogh neat nose!
I hope the Mumpets that were feeling poorly are doing better now.
Made it to Friday and hoping for a quiet weekend. I need to get some house work done but it’s not happening today. I will have to put on decent clothing and run some errands in a bit. I love my credit union and have a car loan through them. However they are so incredibly behind the times on technology - I can’t pay the loan online from an outside bank account, I can only transfer money that’s already there. So every month I have to drive a check to one of their branches to make the payment. But less than a year now before it’s paid off, yay!
My sister made fun of me when I ordered new checks after I moved earlier this year. She couldn’t believe anyone still wrote them. Not only do I have to make my car payment with a check, my lawn guy inexplicably also wants checks. He’ll do Venmo if pressed hard but he really doesn’t like it. The one time I forgot to leave a check under the mat from him he said he’d rather drive by the next day to get it instead of Venmo. So odd.
I was keeping up for a while, earlier in the week, but by today I was once again at a point where I had to skip ahead and only read the last 24 hours of posts. Hope I didn’t miss anything significant!
TGIF. I’m working today, but at least I’m working from home. And I won’t be going back to the office until Thursday: I’m now remote on Mondays and Fridays, and this coming Tuesday and Wednesday I’ll work from home so I can more easily attend (via MS Teams) a 2-day customer meeting being held in California – which means 11am-8pm, my time (ET). I also won’t log on until 10am those days. They’ll still be long days, but that schedule would be unbearable in the office!
In other work news, I just submitted an offer request for a new project manager; someone to backfill the direct report who quit without notice at the end of May. My boss and I interviewed this candidate on Wednesday, and agree that we think she’ll be a good fit. There will still be quite a lot of “acting project manager” stuff for me to do even after she starts – there’s a heckuva learning curve – but at least there will finally be relief in sight.
Two big house-related things got done this week: yesterday the large, shaggy evergreen next to the front door finally got pruned (before the storms), and this morning the new kitchen faucet was installed.
I don’t remember which Mumper referred to the old one as a shower for a parrot ()…I will never know what the previous tenants were thinking!
I eat popcorn most days; on weekdays, it’s often my dinner. The “popcorn” button on my old microwave was perfect, but this one’s was set for 3.5-oz bags while the ones I have are 3.2 oz. Most microwaves have two popcorn size options but I couldn’t figure it out on this one, so after a little trial and error I determined that 2:10 was the perfect amount of time. That was weeks ago, shortly after moving in; I’ve been entering that time manually (almost) every day since. Fast forward to earlier this week, when I found instruction manuals for the oven/cooktop (which is kind of fancy) and the microwave in a drawer and skimmed both. I learned that hitting the popcorn button twice was how to get to the option for a 3-oz bag, and I tried it Wednesday evening…and discovered that doing so sets it for 2:10.
I’ve had a string of sporty two-door cars, and whenever I drive my 77-year-old dad somewhere we take his SUV because he can’t get in/out of my BMW M240i. (I never think of it as being low; it’s higher than my previous Nissan 370Z.) WifeBFF’s 90-year-old godmother also has trouble with my car, but that one I don’t mind so much because it gets me out of picking her up/taking her home on Thanksgiving.
Woah!
Sometimes y’all make it hard for me to love you.
Phew!
You know, as much as I still miss Bailey every single day (it’s been 10 months; this coming Wednesday would have been her 18th birthday) I do not miss the worry and stress! I know they will be a small price to pay whenever the time comes to have another dog, but they’re part of why that won’t be any time soon.
Such a great feeling, innit?
Awww!
Never in a million years could I make anything even resembling a nose.
I just ordered new checks this morning! These days I only use them for my cleaning company: I could keep a credit card on file with them, but I have to cancel/reschedule just often enough that I’d worry about them accidentally charging me when they shouldn’t. I also have a feeling that I dodged some “short notice” fees in the past by not having a card on file. I’ll happily keep leaving checks on the kitchen counter.
At my hotel watching the World Cup. It rained most of the way since I last reported and most of the rides are closed, but the weather may clear by the time the game is over and since a lot of folks may have left by then, I might do an evening visit, if only to scout things out (they are open to 10pm). We’ll see how I feel in a couple hours.
First hotel I’ve been at for some time that you park in front of your room and no interior corridors. But very nice room.
