My dad rented it when I was about 11 or 12. Afterward, he said, “Wow, I don’t remember that much swearing and nudity.” Surprised he didn’t hit the stop button at some point. But man, I couldn’t wait to tell my cousins afterward!
Hmm…I was thinking it was Logan’s Run which I saw in the theater in 1976, age about 8. But despite the nudity it appears it was PG.
So the first must have been the Clint Eastwood vehicle The Gauntlet, also seen in theater on release in 1977, age about 9. Less nudity that LR, but a heck of a lot more violence and general seediness.
Not sure the first, but I’m pretty sure I got taken to see the likes of Alien, Amityville Horror, Fanny & Alexander, and Summer Lovers in pre to early elementary school.
I don’t remember what the first R rated movie was, but I remember being kind of shocked by the line in Back to the Future – “When this baby hits 88 miles per hour you’re gonna see some serious shit.” I’m certain that was the first time I’d seen a movie with any swearing whatsoever in it, even if it was only that one line and it was only rated PG.
National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983). I was about 7 at the time. My sister covered my eyes for the shower scene, so I basically missed the actual R-rated part of the movie, besides the part where Clark flips out at Norman’s house.
The Jerk, with Steve Martin. It was on some cable channel and my brother and I (approximately age 10) were watching it with my grandparents in a hotel room. When the daredevil woman rode up to Navin and told him to get on her bike, my grandma said “Uh oh.” But that was all she said, and my brother and I made sure to keep quiet so they wouldn’t change the channel. There were some uncomfortable scenes!
(However, that was nothing compared to the “burlesque show” that came on after the movie! They definitely knew we were still awake by then…I can’t imagine why they allowed us to see that.)
The one that stand was Fritz the Cat which was changed from an X to an R in the late 70’s.
When it was re-released, my friend insisted we see it. We are born the same year, but since I was early born, I was 17 before him, so I was designated to buy the tickets. The lady at the box office refused to allow me to buy the tickets saying I need to be 18. I argued back that it clearly said 17 on the poster* and she was wrong not to sell me the tickets. I called my Dad and explained what was going on, specifically that the movie as a cartoon. He came down and talked down the lady and bought the tickets for us.
*To be fair, I’ve seen posters with stickers covering the 17 with 18 or 16 depending on the content and if she said I wasn’t my friends parent or guardian, she’d have me there.
BTW, did anyone else see R rated trailers between the GP/PG main and co-feature movies? This only happened at the drive-in and some of the trailers were definitely soft-core hard R. Always found that odd since it had to be separate reel shown between the two movies.
Alien was the first one for me … watched it at age 9 circa late 1980/early 1981 on HBO.
First one in the theater was Beverly Hills Cop (opened 12/5/1984) when I was 13. Just me and a 14-year-old friend of mine. Ticket-taker never said a word.
I thought it might have been “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” ('69).
The poster indicates “M”, but the description indicates that is equivalent to “PG”.
I also thought “Deliverance”, but that came out in 72.
I remember seeing Revenge of the Nerds in my friend’s basement on HBO when we were kids. I am a bit surprised that both of our parents let us watch it, surely they must have known that there would have been sex and nudity and whatnot.
