Damn I hate when I forget the second paranthesis.
I was born Brian Patrick Murphy. I was adopted as a teenager and had the opportunity to choose a name for myself. As I was at the same highschool I had attended for the last 3 years and was used to being called Brian, I chose:
Brian Murphy Max.
Not very creative, I know.
Like **Vanilla[/], I get people asking how to spell my last name. I usually respond that it’s a german surname, not something I made up in the 80’s. They get ticked off by that comment for some reason.
Jeremy James Waterfall
I’ve never much liked my first name, but generally go by it. I really never use my middle name or initial, and hate JJ. First name and middle name together always reminds me of getting yelled at by my parents. My last name is pretty cool, though. People often end up using it alone to refer to me, which I don’t mind either.
Let’s see: Meaghan Patricia Siobhan O’Malley
Yep. Green. How apropos.
David Andrew Lawrenchuk.
Go ahead and try to pronounce my last name right…
Richard Clark Culpeper. I really like my names.

Entre vos y yo Lwrenchuk ¿Exactamente que tenes vos?. I would really to share your secret.
Okay, I’ll bite I guess. First, I love reading all of these interesting and cool names. I simply adore both Colin and Ryan as men’s names. And Patrick. And… well, okay, I like a lot of them.
My birth certificate says Karen, but I have gone by Karyn since I was about 13. I hated middle and high school, when a teacher would say my name and at least 3, 4 or 5 would ask which one they wanted. I will have to commit severe bodily harm on anyone who might possibly know my middle name and repeats it on here. I refuse to even use the initial unless forced to on legal stuff. (Long story, having to do with how the German nuns at the Kinderschulla <spelled wrong, I know> pronounced my given and middle name together.) My maiden name was Hammack. And no, it’s *not * what you string between two trees. That would be a Hammock. My married name is almost always misspelled, for unknown reasons. It’s spelled exactly like it sounds, no extra letters, no silent letters, very simple.
So, I am:
Karyn <evil, wicked, too many in my family with this middle name> Hammack <last name too unusual to put here, though most of the dopers I’ve met IRL know it>
My son’s name is Kenneth Paul. My daughter’s name is Lacey Brynn. And my hubby Mr Bear’s first name is Melvin, though he will only answer to Mel. If anyone is interested, there is a reason why my kids have the names they do.
Wendy.
it’s not Windy.
it’s said as such: when-dee
It seems only foreigners say it right.
I get Windy a lot here in Texas.
God I hate it with a white hot passion.
My first name is Jordan. I’m not going to reveal my middle name (just to keep you guessing). I’m also not going to put my last name here, although I have revealed it in a previous thread, sans my first name. If you feel like looking through all 850 some posts of mine, you’ll find it.
Jman
Although, now that I search for that thread, I realize it was lost during the Great SDMB Period of Darkness…so my last name will remain a mystery except for anyone who actually remembers me posting that name in the first place.
Oh…and my middle name starts with ‘C’ and is not that common.
Kenneth William Braziel
Last name pronounced like “razzle” and “dazzle” (Strange Texan influence, though they now pronounce it “Brayazzle” accent on the “aya”)
And it’s Ken, not Kenny or Kenneth. First name is maternal grandfather, second is paternal grandfather. That’s what I get for being the first kid.
Dang there’s a lot of us Murphys in here…who’d 'a thunk it?
Emma Louise
Generally go by Emma unless in deep deep trouble with the parents.
It looks and sounds very girly when it is written down like that. I hated it when I was little but I quite like it now and will answer to pretty much any version.
However blood was spilt when the first and last person called me “Emmy Lou” oh nononononono…
Simple really. Megan Marie Duran. Got my first name from the book The Thornbirds and my mom just snatched whatever she wanted for my middle name. And oh yes, I am aware of the eighties band that shares my last name. I like them. Don’t care about what people say to me. I take it. Now, Megan on the other hand…whew…I get nicks all over and all I can say is I’m fine with it. Just as long as it’s not too insulting, then I will be fine. I like to shorten my first name to Meg though.
heh…what a boring post. lol
Habtom Tekle Tsehaye
In my culture (Eritrean) your first name (or given name ex.“Habtom”) is from your parents who make it up just for you (that is YOUR name), then your middle name represents your father’s first name, and your last name represents your grandfathers first name.
Ex.
Grandfather’s name: Tsehaye WoldeMichael Negash
Father’s full name: Tekle Tsehaye WodleMichael
My full name: Habtom Tekle Tsehaye
My Son/Daughter 's full name: Alem Habtom Tekle
There is not such thing as a “family name”( or last name as you know it) which gets passed down from generation to generation, your last name only represents your grandfathers first name and is not passed on to anyone else, it ends with you.
Middle name (in Eritrea) is thought just as important as a “family name” (to the average Canadian) would be. So, all your kids will get your first name as their middle name, and if you have had daughters they will not under any circumstances change their (middle or last) name when they get married. The idea for that is: “You were raised by your father, not by your husband”.
I know, I know, we completly leave out the Mother in our naming process. This is from the old belief that you are your FATHER’S kid not your parent’s child. However, people dont think about this when they are name their kid, it’s just that it’s tradition.
Kin to here when everybody in the family needs to adopt the father’s last name (inculding mother and all kids). It is sexist, but it is also tradition.
Let me just say that was fascinating efrem. Fascinating.

Lsura - I thought that Bl. Kateri Tekawitha was only beatified and not canonized. My confirmation name is Anne, but I strongly considered Francis, even though that’s a male saint. But in the end I chose Anne, the mother of Mary.

You’re right, she is only beatified, not canonized. I made it clear when I chose her, and no one said I couldn’t take someone who was only beatified, so I went with it.
Now, I wish I’d put more thought into it - I just wanted someone different from the Elizabeths and Annes that all my classmates were choosing. St. Martin de Porres would be neat - along with so many of the other saints I’ve learned about since then.
