Your Given Name

Lsura - I’m looking for a good Lives of the Saints to help with my devotions. How are you learning about them?

POOP - I hate vB. On my other board it automatically transposes the posts from HTML to vB.

I found a dictionary of saints in my local library. I checked it out, and then I research the ones that catch my eye. I try to focus on one a day, but lately that’s slipped a bit with everything else going on. In some cases, the only information I’ve found is what’s in the book - this is particularly true of some of those who are no longer on the liturgical calendar. For saints like Martin de Porres, I may spend 2-3 days researching during my free time, with most of the research being on the internet.

I need to purchase a Lives of the Saints or a dictionary of saints - the one from the library is free, sure…but I can’t take it with me when I move in 2 months.

I also am a member of a msn community that posts a saint each day - usually one of the ones who is celebrated that day. If you’d like that link, e-mail me and I’ll send it to you.

I took out a book about the lives of the saints from the library a while ago, but I can’t remember now what the title is. Something like “All Saints: Lives of the Saints.” Maybe when I get around to going to the library again, I’ll look the book up again and post it here. I thought the book was quite good, but then again, I’m not Catholic, so I don’t know whether the book will be good enough for you. (no offense inteded  )

Anna Marie
You couldn’t pronounce the last name.

Jessica Catherine Brigid Terwilliger.

Jessica is from the Allman Brothers song, which was my dad’s favorite at the time. Most people call me either the full form or “Jess;” I can’t stand it when people call me “Jessie.” There is only one person in this world who can get away calling me “Jessie” – but he’s pretty much allowed to call me whatever he wants.

Catherine is my mom’s (as well as my grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s) first name.

Brigid is my confirmation name. There was no way I was going to be stuck with Mary or Elizabeth. If I hadn’t chosen Brigid, I probably would have picked Dymphna (patron saint of mental illness) or Anastasia (which my sister ended up using as her confirmation name).

I am new Here----- HI! My real name is Tiffany Dawn. I will keep the last name to my self. Altho I am not fond of it.

Kelsey Grammer (of course).

My first name is Kavita (somewhat common Indian name)

I’ll skip the rest as it is uncommon enough to hunt me down

In our culture, a person’s middle name is usually their father’s first name. If female, when you get married, your middle name changes to your husband’s first name. (Your first name is changed also–new name is picked by in-laws based on astrological charts)

Ok, ok ok… my turn now. Hi… my name’s Yvette Lian and I’m a straightdope addict.

Seriously though… not many people call me Yvette. I hate it cos it’s really girly and I don’t think it suits me that well. I go by Max, mostly, short for Maxine. Maxxxie is my online persona, and is derived from what people holler at me from the other side of a volleyball court… “Hey Maxxxieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! How ya doin’???”

People assume I am French because I have a French first name. There’s quite a history behind the name, but I have no French blood in me (to my knowledge). I do speak French (it’s my first language), but ethnically, I identify as part Greek, part British, part German. Yay!

As for Lian - who knows. My paternal grandfather was British, but from an Egyptian family. All the other Lians I’ve seen have been asian, with two exceptions. Someone else out there is also called Yvette Lian (www.yvettelian.com) and is Dominican. My father recently came across a fellow in Brazil who it would appear comes from the same family lines in Egypt. boggle

As for my middle name - bah, it aint worth repeating

Max.

<jaded eye> Do you have any proof? <jaded eye> Why would a big Hollywood celebrity be hanging with a bunch of average folks like us?

Mark Elliott Hastings. I was Glenn Elliott Jr. for the first six days of my life but my dad didn’t want a kid named after him so my mom changed my first name. The wierd part is 24 years after I was born my father had a son with his second wife. Yep, he’s Glenn Elliott Jr.

I’d like to mention here that Flamsterette_X has a really cool name… I’m jealous.

Thomas Lloyd Bell
I was named after my grandfathers - whose first and middle names were Ira Thomas & Hubert Landon. So I should have been Thomas Landon (much cooler  ), but my dad and my mom’s dad didn’t get along too well. Something about no-son-of-mine-is-going-to-be-named-after-that-s.o.b. or somesuch. But it could have been so much worse - Ira Hubert. I would’ve gotten my ass kicked EVERY day of school :D. As it is, I suspect my middle name was picked because of a popular TV series of the day, Sea Hunt, starring Lloyd Bridges. Why not, my younger brother, Robert Dale, was named after Dale Robertson, who starred in a Western whose name I completely forget.

I had an uncle whose full given name was C.B. Bell. It seems my grandparents had picked out his initials to match those of a close relative (family tradition), but never got around to picking a name to go with them. In the Army, his personnel file listed him as C period B period Bell.

Flamsterette_X - thanks for the help. I’ll e you. I try to say the rosary every night, along with my prayers, but I’ve been wanting to put a little more study in there.

StG

Thanks. It’s a Chinese name, and I’ve posted all I know about it already. If you want to know more, you could ask me, and I guess I’ll see what my parents know about it.

StGermain, I don’t know much, as I’ve said. But if there’s something I can do to help, let me know. I’m still not sure what the book’s called, but I’ll look it up eventually.

Grant Chastain.

Yes, Grant.

Michael Gerald King. No big secret given it would probably take only ten minutes to find it via a search (I used to use Mike King as a username). A common name but not overly so. Michael was chosen because my parents liked it. Gerald is my father’s name. I am probably distantly related to the author Stephen King, but ironically not on the King side of our families. Michael King was the name civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr had at birth, so I got that going for me.
