I played in junior soccer leagues and as an adult if 5-a-side leagues and tournaments
I’ve played pool (UK 8-ball) in a league.
Otherwise the main sports I used to enjoy (before I spectacularly busted my knee) are badminton and basketball. I also went through a phase of playing a lot of darts.
My interpretation was, that’s exactly what it means. Not that many people jump over hurdles (then again, there’s Parkour…) or throw javelins (well, maybe in the SCA), or hammers (certain marriages I’ve known) or go pole-vaulting (unless they have to cross a canal…). So, my guess is that most non-team-oriented Track & Field is just running.
I participate in the occasional timed 5k race, which is enough “competing just for fun” for me. I finish about 4,000th, of course, but hey, it says “competing”, not “winning”.
