Your involvement in participation sports

I’m just curious to get an idea about how involved people have been in certain sports during their lives, and at what level(s). Multiple choice-poll to follow soon. Please check ALL that apply for you, and feel free to elaborate in a post.

If you’ve done it only once or twice, and decided it wasn’t for you, does it count?

I’m sure I’ve forgotten some sports, so I apologize in advance.

Sure.

I got paid college for both track and football. I went with professional since that seemed closer than league level.

Assuming Little League and intramurals count (college, military, and law school), then I’ve covered everything except archery (at a league level but have done some just for fun shooting) and hockey (never played at any level above video games). My “other” entry is softball.

I bowl for fun every weekend. I have also done lots of bowling leagues, and a few tournaments.

(:smack: I just realized I left golf off of the list, which was actually the sport that made me start thinking of this thread. Are mods able to edit poll options?)

Anyway, I’ve played golf, tennis, baseball and football and billiards casually. And I just joined a tennis league, but I haven’t played a match yet.

OK, got it. I marked Archery, Billiards, and Bowling as things I have done “just for fun” since I think I’ve done them once each. Oh wait, I should have put Tennis, too.

Any other sports I’ve participated in were because I was required to at school, and not because I actually wanted to, so they don’t count. If I’d had my way PE would have been abolished.

Hear, hear!!

Played a lot of sports in leagues over the years, although I am a professional basketball coach. But get paid bugger all!

Sport is a big part of growing up in Australia, I was not very good at most sports but did enjoy the team work etc.

The idea of banning PE at school is dumb, we need our kids doing healthy sports. There is an argument that says that some schools put too much pressure on kids but that is the quality of coaching/teaching and not PE it self.

No apology necessary, it’s near impossible to remember everything, but since you brought it up…you’ve left out all of the combative sports - boxing, kickboxing, judo, wrestling, karate and TKD, fencing, etc. You’ve also got archery but no shooting sports. And where’s jai alai, damnit?

I picked basketball because that’s the only sport I play regularly. I played HS football but that was years ago and school related. Somehow I thought this to be what I’ve done post-college and independently. I did get a bit of a shock seeing there was a professional football player AND a professional track athlete. Not to diminish Oredigger77’s athletic credentials but it wasn’t what I suspected. I have no beef with him listing as professional though since imo college sports is definitely a tier above just “league play” and as paid in tuition, room/board, and stipend.

Track & field in high school/college. Also cross country.
I’ve played other sports but I was so bad, it did not qualify as “for fun”.

Golf and curling come to mind as other forgotten sports.

Also color me surprised that there are 17 archers and 19 basketball players

N.B., I have not participated in anything for over 30 years; my choices were all during my youth.

I picked 6 from the list but I have also played, at a decent level -

Rugby Union
Rugby League
Cricket

I played one game of Australian Rules Football as a fill in.

I swam competitively for a few years.

But we didn’t have home computers back then.

I’ve had a go at most sports, 'cause I’m interested in trying new stuff and being as active as I can.

Besides hockey (I’m meaning field hockey, not that icy caper) - which is my main sport that I’ve played for 25+ years and at National 1 level through my Uni years - you’ve missed most of my other interests - cricket (school team), badminton (to county level), rugby (school team), skiing, cycling, swimming, running, triathlon, surfing, kayaking, wind surfing, sailing etc…, all of which I still participate in regularly, depending on time of year and my location. The three triathlon disciplines take up most of my active time at the moment, along with hiking, rock climbing and mountaineering (if that counts as a sport?)

Golf is a pretty big miss in the survey.

I play baseball twice a week plus weekend tournaments. Also run, and do other stuff that falls under “other” in this poll.

I didn’t check things I don’t do anymore.

I counted intramural participation as just for fun.
My others would be softball, ultimate frisbee, and golf.
