So tonight I got a check for $12.62 as my share of the settlement of a class action suit entitled Lindmark, et al. v. American Express Company, et al. I have no idea what that was all about, but since I’ve also now got my tax refund check (a whopping $192 - let’s party), it’s going into the deposit with it. I understand that by accepting this payment I am likely surrendering my right to independently sue over whatever the issue was on my own (probably - for twelve bucks I’m not going to read the 24 or so pages of legalese that came before the check).
I got another one a few weeks ago, for about $3. I’ve since lost it, but I do remember that I had no appreciation of whatever transgression against my person that was about.
In the past I’ve received others. I remember getting some certificate from Gateway (that had to be notarized) that offered a $20 discount on my next purchase of a monitor from them as their settlement of some class action suit of which I had, apparently, been an unwitting party.
Quelling my rage, for the moment, against class action suits, I have to wonder about the jury questionnaire that asks if I’ve ever sued someone. If I’ve never been an active litigant, but learn belatedly that I’ve been counted as a party to a class action suit, how do I respond to that question?
