I don’t know. Because I can. I like his early stuff, and “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Things We Said Today” are among my favorite Beatles songs, no matter the period. I don’t like the more ballad-y piano-y stuff (even though I am a keyboardist/piano player myself.) It’s just taste, man. There doesn’t need to be a reason for it. “Hey Jude” doesn’t tickle my musical funny bone. I also know that “Yesterday” is one of the most covered songs of all time, and that one doesn’t do a thing for me, either. I’ll take “Eleanor Rigby,” though. That one I dig from his (somewhat) later stuff.
Oh, and of course I love him for his contributions as a bassist. Fantastically melodic player, one of my favorite pop/rock bassists of all time.
I just read this book Beatles Vs Stones and it just started to get to me, this Mccartney hating. Like it’s become a cottage industry. It’s by Kot and deDerogatis and they are real clowns. They write this book supposedly to analyze the rivalry and have nothing positive to say about him. They actually call him an uncontrollable show off, and their evidence is that his BG vocals were very vibrant, and he played bass so well!!!?? They also said that Revolver is the best Beatles LP but that the Stones had 3 or 4 better ones. You might feel that way, but how would you then be the one to write this book?
Hating McCartneys sentiment or Lennons pretension is just throwing things at a big obvious target and not appreciating the band, which was more than a partnership, IMMHOO.
Also: I have rarely listened to Revolution 9 since 1968 (I have a numbered copy.) Why would I hate it? Let it be.
I’m not entirely sure what you’re talking about or whether it applies to me, or if you’re just using it as a riffing point. I don’t really read that much about music or music criticism. I just know what I like and what I don’t, and I like McCartney plenty well; just not those particular songs. (And, for my tastes, no way any of the Stones albums beat Revolver. I didn’t even start appreciating the Stones until about a decade ago.)
ETA: Oh, I am familiar with Kot and DeRogatis–their radio show Sound Opinions is about the only musical criticism I consume. I generally ignore DeRo, but Kot is usually spot-on, and listening to their show has made me appreciate artists I used to dislike or just not understand, like Pink Floyd, and introduce me to artists I was unfamiliar with.
Hold on there. That sort of comparison’s not completely fair to Hitler, is it?
No offense, just riffing. I used to like that show, but I am reconsidering. That book was a real buzzkill for me.
What’s that song where they song about how “Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl…”?
That one. It’s terrible enough that I’ve repressed the title from my brain.
Wow, someone zombified a 12 year old thread to opine on Beatles songs they don’t care for.
BTW the ONLY correct answer is The Beatles - Christmas Time is Here Again - YouTube Christmas Time Is Here Again
