YOUR misheard lyrics

“One Headlight”: For the longest time I thought it was

The incinerator
Will pull it all together

I still hear that when I hear the song.

“Silver Bells”: When I was a kid, for my school holiday program, the teachers got together onstage and sang this song. Their diction was not very clear. For the opening lines, I thought I heard

City cyborgs,
Busy cyborgs,
Dressed in holiday style …

“…when I’m six feet four.”

Golden Earring - “Twilight Zone”

Actual: Place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
Misheard: Feelers(?) in the house, feels like being blown.

Dion - “The Wanderer”
Actual: With my two fists of iron, but I’m going nowhere
Misheard: With my two vista vine, but I’m going nowhere

There’s a repetition later on in the song that makes it clearer that it’s morning birds whistling.

I used to hear that song a lot on the radio when I was a teenager, and I didn’t know the real title of it for a long time. I thought it was “Poisoned Summer”. Which made the lyric “my love for you will still be strong / after the poisoned summer has gone.”

Sufragette City:

“Don’t lean on me man cause you can’t afford the ticket back from Sufragette City”

I heard
“You’re a mean lonely man cause you can’t afford to check it, back in Suffragette City”

Wow. I have always heard him singing “Or steal my daddy’s cue and make a living out of praying fools.”

I like my version better.

Thanks. Morning Bros is kind of funny though.

So, televangelist.

Has this one been mentioned yet? Rolling Stones’ “Far Away Eyes”, the line about listening to gospel music on the <something> radio station. I still can’t tell if he is saying “college” or “colored”. They both kind of make sense.

Not so much misheard as misinterpreted – when I was little

Did you ever see a lassie
A lassie
A lassie
Did you ever see a lassie
Go this way and that?

called up a mental image of a dancing border collie.

I also thought of St. Mary in “Silent Night” as really fat, because, you know, “Round yon virgin.”

I just discovered I’ve been mishearing “Rolling in the Deep”

Actual lyric:
You had my heart inside of your hand

What I heard:
You had my heart and soul in your hand

Just discovered one today:

Rush: 2112

V. Oracle: The Dream

They left the planet long ago
The elder race still learn and grow
Their power grows with purpose strong
To claim the home where they belong
Home to tear the Temples down…
Home to change!

Where it says “Their power grows…” I thought it was “A flower grows…” which is quite a difference from intergalactic travellers.

That reminds me; for a short time I heard,

We are the priests
Of the Temples of Syrinx

as

We are the beasts
Of the Temples of Syrinx

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
for decades I thought it was

‘Like a leather messiah.’

Today I learned it’s

‘Like a leper messiah.’

A Leopard Messiah might be quite good.

Who are you
Lyric: Who are you?
Heard: Blue orange

My wife watches some TV show that apparently uses this for its theme song, and after hearing it for a week or so I finally asked her WTF?

That’s CSI: Las Vegas. Song is by The Who.

Well, but the Stones don’t give a rip about college radio.

For the holiday season, I always heard:

Later on, we’ll perspire
As we dream by the fire

As a kid, I always thought the title of “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps was actually “It’s Going Vinyl”.

As in a record. Meaning the song would eventually make it to vinyl records.

Clearly I was not a very bright child.
