YOUR misheard lyrics

Same here! All these years…

Yup, I hear fish islands too.

A friend in high school was WAY off on this lyric. In “Fish Heads” by Barnes and Barnes:

Real lyric: Roly-poly fish heads are never seen drinking cappuccino…
He heard: Roly-poly fish heads are never seen eating Capistrano…

Eric Clapton’s ‘After Midnight’

I always hear the backup singers saying “Captain Midnight, Captain Midnight”

Dire Straits “Money for Nothing”

Actual lyrics
Money for nothin’ and your chicks for free

What I heard
Money for nothin’ and your checks are free

Always thought it was Janet Blair.

Pearl Jam’s Even Flow just shuffled on my computer. I of course have been listening to this song for YEARS…I had pasted in the lyrics about two years ago, but didn’t go over the stanzas with a fine tooth comb when I did.

I then idly noticed this morning that the line from the opening stanza ostensibly goes like this:

“Oh, dark grin he can’t help when he’s happy, looks insane”

While I was 100% sure that it was:

“Oh, girlfriend he can’t have-even when he’s happy, he looks insane.”

I just went back and listened to it again, and I am still sure that it is the latter; the key words definitely sound to me like those in the 2nd one.

If I had known the name of this Broken Social Scene song was “Cause = Time”, I probably wouldn’t have misheard these lines:

They all want to love the cows
'Cause they all need to be the cows
They all want to fuck the cows

I’m so glad you asked because I just got reminded of my own deeply personal one.

I always heard this:

“It never rains in California
But girl don’t they warn you
It pours…
Menopause”

No lie.

Only women bleed.

Killer Queen, by Queen

Correct:
She’s a killer queen, gun powder and gelatine (I think; I know we’ve discussed this here).

I heard:
She’s a killer queen, gunfighter agility…

I like mine better.

Me too…three…twelve…

Not me, but my 10-year-old daughter.

On the sound track to Les Miz, the song “Do You Hear the People Sing?” has this lyric:

The blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France.

She thought it was:

  • The blood of the Martians will water the meadows of France.*

That’s how we sing it now .

All In The Family’s theme song, Those Were The Days.

Lyric: Gee, our old LaSalle ran great
Misheard: Giarolla salary rate

http://www.tkinter.smig.net/Stuff/MarsAttacksCards/41HorrorInParis.htm

It sounded like they were naming an Italian-English woman to me:

Giarolla Sarah Grey

Also (for me):
Lyric: Boy, the way Glenn Miller played!
Misheard: Boyda Wakelin Milla Blade (WTF!)

Apparently I’m not the only one who didn’t understand it either. I recall a TV Guide issue with an article on AitF, and the intro to the articl listed those lyrics. A subsequent letter to the editor said something to the effect, “Thanks! I’ve been wondering what they were saying!”

I could not understand that part for the life of me. The most I could make of it was some nonsense like

G-r-o sour and grey.

No, it’s clear as day. He’s singing “Slam in the back of my…Jagged ass”.

The Bill Cosby Show

To me they lyrics always sounded like Hoo Lord! Gonna get some raggets… and some rolls… and some reezinrizins Ha, ha, ha, ha!
