Your most painfully beautiful song

Sarah McLachlan’s “I will remember you”. A friend sang it at my daughter-in-law’s funeral. I will never know how she got through it without breaking down, but she did. I can’t bear to hear it to this day, and it’s been nearly 9 years.

I love Bluegrass music. One real old-fashioned tearjerker that makes me cry every time I hear it is The Osborne Brothers singing “Will there be any schoolbus in Heaven?” Another Bluegrass group I love is The Seldom Scene and their entire “Baptizing” album makes me cry.

A bluegrass song that gets me is There Is a Time by The Dillards. Here they are performing it as the Darling Family on the Andy Griffith Show.

Wow! I remember that. I remember seeing it and I guess it had to be when it was orignally broadcast.

Thanks for bringing a lovely memory to my mind.

Mna Na H’Eireann (The Women of Ireland) by the Chieftans (from way back before Celtic Commodification was a staple on PBS)

Also from Barry Lyndon, Schubert’s Piano Trio in E Flat

My vote too for Arvo Paart’s Tabula Rasa.

Aram Khachaturian’s Gayaneh’s Adagio

Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise

Any one of them would be great to slash your wrists to, or take blood coagulant and enjoy 'em all!

…and no one in love with me…

I’m late to the thread, but I’m a huge Scott Miller fan. That guy can write some achingly beautiful songs, right up there with Big Star, in my book, if not even better.

Some other songs thaat rank right up there with that are
*Like a Girl Jesus

We Love You Carol and Alison

Throwing the Election

Not Expecting Both Contempo and Classique

Just Gone

Way Too Helpful*

Neil Young, Birds.

Mark Shultz has a gift for a one-per-album tearjerker:
He’s My Son
Letters From War
Walking Her Home

Bob Carlisle’s Butterfly Kisses makes me teary when I think about my little girl getting married one day.

Billy Joel’s Got to Begin Again has a special sound for me these days, too.

Part of Your World by Ashman and Menken

Cowboy Junkies - about half of their repertoire but right now “Come Calling - her song” and Bea’s Song

child of mine

“This Memory” by the Wyrd Sisters.
“I’ll Cover You (Reprise)” from RENT (the one Collins sings at Angel’s funeral, where the company joins in with “Seasons of Love”).
“Being Boring” and “Your Funny Uncle” by Pet Shop Boys.

This thread inspires:
“Zombie”, by the Cranberries
“The Ballad of Resurrection Joe”, by Rob Zombie
“Cat’s Eye Resurrection”, by White Zombie
…and…
“Black Zombie” by Nas.

Since my musical tastes are constantly changing, I’ll just have to offer up these picks from my current Euro-chick-metal phase (all youtube links):

Epica - Solitary Ground
In me, there’s still a place the fulfills me
a sanctity here that I call home, I run to
when winter descends
If I try, can I find solid ground?
Or am I just wasting time?

Within Temptation - Memories
All of my memories keep you near
in silent moments, imagine you’d be here
all of my memories keep you near
in silent whispers, silent tears

Within Temptation - Our Farewell
So sorry your world is tumbling down
I’ll watch you through these nights
Rest your head and go to sleep
Because my child, this is not our farewell

Fifteen years ago, I would’ve gone with the aforementioned Brothers in Arms and Romeo & Juliet by Dire Straits (and if anyone here wants to mention the Indigo Girls version – LIAR! IT NEVER HAPPENED! NOT IN MY WORLD, DEMMIT), or Vincent by Don McLean.

Missed the edit window. I just wanted to mention it’s infinitely amusing to me to see a bunch of metalheads with shaved heads and mohawks make such a touching video

“First day of my life” by Bright Eyes

Can’t even bear to listen to it really, though much of that is what is means to me personally as it directly connects with a certain someone.

“Bittersweet Symphony” by the Verve. A nearly perfect answer to the OP!

Joan Baez, Plaisir d’Amour
