Your Neighborhood Food

Yelp lists 552 places within a 1 mile radius of me and 3917 places within a 5 mile radius.

I live in an Arab/Mexican/Ecuadorean/Korean neighborhood. Metromix lists 36 places in my neighborhood (judging by what they include, about a mile radius). Almost none are chains. Yelp lists 386 within 2 miles, 155 within 1 mile: Korean, Afghan, Dutch, pan-Arab, Mexican, Italian, Thai, Colombian, Chinese, Japanese, Algerian, Korean-Mexican, pan-Latin, “modern European” (sounds Serbian by the dishes mentioned), Salvadoran, Iraqi (mostly Assyrian)…

I love my neighborhood.

The places I can and will walk to are:

Taco Bell
Wendy’s
O’Charleys
A Movie Theater (hey popcorn)
Paradise South of the Border
Paradise Grill (owned by the same people, right next door)
Capozzi’s Pizza
Chepe’s (mexican)
Publix
Kroger
Jersey Mikes deli
Ming Dynasty
Buddha’s Delight
Aspen’s Steakhouse
Rosa’s Pizza
Bullock’s (a liquor store owned by the cousin of Sandra Bullock, I am not kidding)
Boston Market
Asahi (sushi and hibachi)
Einstein’s bagels

All of that is literally on one intersection. We also have a hardware store. I think we’d make a great zombie stronghold with all of this nearby. And we are in a very tree-heavy residential area.

275 places in 2 miles for me on yelp.

Just the places I have been to before that I would be happy to go spend some money at.

Let’s see.

Christophers
Black Chile
Arribas

There are also plenty of chains, everything from Ruth Chiris to Chilis to Taco Bell.

For me:

McDonald’s
Burger King
Wendy’s
Taco Bell/Long John Silvers
Pizza Hut
Subway
Blimpie’s
A local pizza place
Another pizza/fried chicken restaurant
A new steak and seafood place
An italian restaurant
An old-fashioned diner
Chinese takeout
Yet another pizza place.
Still yet another pizza place
Dunkin Donuts
Papa John’s Pizza
A bagel shop
Popeye’s Chicken
KFC

Here in Bangkok, I live literally within a five minutes’ walk of two (2) Starbucks, plus a MacDonald’s, KFC, Swensen’s ice cream, Pizza Company (local Pizza Hut clone), Subway sandwich shop and Mister Donut.

If I cared to walk 10-15 minutes, I’d find another MacDonalds and another Mister Donut, a Dunkin’ Donuts and an Au Bon Pain.

Probably more, but that’s all I can think of. Lots of Thai, Japanese, Chinese and even Vietnamese eateries sprinkled among those too.

5 minutes? None. 10 minutes? None. All the commercial areas are at least 15 minutes away. We used to have a small gas station across the river that served sandwiches, but they’ve been closed since August thanks to Hurricane Irene.

When was a kid the nearest gas station was not in walking limit. Nor was anything else. And my parents have since moved even farther out. I don’t see how they stand it but I know my mother appreciates internet.

My dad, well, I think he’d be happy as Grizzly Adams.

Metromix Chicago lists 165 restaurants in my neighborhood.

My neighborhood itself is pretty grim- it’s basically a couple of Ethiopian grocers who will make you a microwaved sandwichs and a handful of bulletproof-glass Chinese take-out joints. But if I walk about 10 minutes, I have my choice of hundreds of establishments.

Within a mile:

7-Eleven (two)
Giant Food Store
Target
Outback Steakhouse
Crystal Thai
McDonald’s (two)
Popeye’s
Flavors (soul food, IIRC)
Andy’s (Chinese takeout)
Ginger Beef (Chinese takeout)
Great American Steak & Buffet
Meaza (Ethiopian)
Little Quiapo
Olive Garden
Bamian (Afgani)
Restaurante El Salvador
Dairy Queen
Cici’s Pizza
Babylon Futbol Cafe
Bamboo Buffet (Chinese)
Dunkin’ Donuts
Baskin Robbins
Duangrat’s Thai
Sâuçá
Subway
City Diner
Einstein Bros. Bagels
Pho Golden Cow
Chili’s
Jerusalem
KFC
5600 Grill
Panera Bread
Edy’s Chicken & Steak
Quizno’s
Bread and Kabob
Moe’s Southwest Grill
Trader Joe’s
Starbucks
Athens
Vinh Loi
Kampo
Chicken Place
Cafe Sazon
The Perfect Pita
Vocelli Pizza
Pizza Hut (take out/delivery)
Papa John’s
New World
Atlacatl
La Madeline
Ruby Tuesday
Golden Chicken

I live in a small town just outside of Nashville. Using the OP’s original limit of within two miles, no crossing major thouroughfares or walking where there are no sidewalks, this is what I came up with:

Donut Palace
Whitt’s BBQ
Applebee’s
Jack-in-the-Box
WalMart deli
Daily’s Chinese Buffet
Gondola (Greek and Italian)
El Molino (Mexican)
Cici’s Pizza
Maggie Moo’s
La Loma (Mexican)
Legand’s Sports Bar
Demo’s Steaks and Spaghetti
Uncle Pete’s Truck Stop
City Limits Cafe

Five minutes by car would also include a couple of sushi joints, several meat and threes, most of the chains, an Italian place, several Chinese places (sitdown, buffet and takeout), a bunch of grocery store and gas station delis, a good Thai takeout, a number of Mexican, a bunch of bars and several barbeque places. Although there are a few, we are sorely lacking coffee places here. :frowning:

I’ve likely missed some and I’m only half an hour from Nashville (when I want something different), but I have some pretty good choices.

Most of mine are local or local chains so naming them specifically would help stalkers ( ) so they get creative names like “Greek place”

I live in a house in a tree filled lot, older suburban, and I think I have a good number of options.

Within an easy mile or 1.5 mile walk, sidewalks, crosswalks, etc:
Panera
Chipotle
Starbucks
dessert place
Mexican place
frozen yogurt
greek place
chinese place
grocery store with large food court/prepared foods eat in options
Caribou coffee
Italian place
diner
bar and grill
bakery
italian place
wendys
soups/salads
pizza

1.5-2.5 miles
pizza
bar and grill
ice cream
Greek place
Greek takeout (associated with aforementioned Greek place)
Subway
sandwiches
McDonalds
local coffee shop
Japanese and sushi
Gourmet pizza
wine bar
caribou coffee
asian fusion
whole foods
chinese
frozen yogurt
bagels

I live in suburbia, within walking distance there’s a great pizza place and a couple of delis, one of which does dinner.

If I was to drive 5 - 10 minutes there’s a fish and chip shop, a Thai restaurant (called Thai Wunon) and a French bakery that’s only open during the day. Another 5 minutes and there’s a McDonald’s and a nation-wide pizza chain restaurant.

I’m jealous! I don’t live in a densely-populated area so there’s not much within a mile.

Within two miles or so:

McDonalds
BK
Romas Italian
A couple of small diners.

That’s it, I think. Besides some liquor stores and a gas station.

I was curious, so according to Yelp there are 121 restaurants/delis/fast food options within 4 blocks of my apartment.
If I change that to within 1 mile, it comes up with 584.

Ok, maybe I should have asked “how many people who live in a 4 bedroom home on a 1/2 acre lot…”

If I changed it to 4 blocks my list would be zero.

Actually, I find this really interesting just how much is available to many people here, and we mostly take it all for granted.

Within 2 miles, 282 restaurants. Within 1 mile (true walking distance IMO) is 60. I would increase the “real” numbers by 30% since lots of places aren’t on Yelp around here.

As for the places I frequent/ on my radar that I actually do walk to or pass by on my way elsewhere are
-Two Thai restaurants
-3 cheap breakfast joints

  • 7-10 bars, 3 of which offer very good draft selections
  • 4 or 5 family owned pizzerias
  • 3 upscale restaurants
  • several other ethnic places like Indian, Mexican
  • plenty of cheap Chinese
  • Vietnamese
  • two Italian grocery stores
  • several independent coffee shops and a Starbucks
  • subway, panera, other “healthy” fast casual joints

The list goes on! Because I’m picky I’ll often go to the “best” ethnic place when I’m craving that particular cuisine. My neighborhood is the best in terms of walking distance to restaurants I frequent but I won’t go to the Indian or pho places here just because they’re close, I’ll drive the 5 to 15 minutes to get the best ones.

But I love where I live and am reminded of it constantly whenever visiting my future in laws or my family, who live in the suburbs.
