One of mine that I thought of that made me put up this thread was this: as irrational as it may be, as bad play as it may be, if I have four cards to a flush draw, in any combination, even if it’s inside and there’s all kinds of crazy shit that can cream me, even if it’s for all my chips with only one card to come…99.9% of the time I can’t lay it down. I just can’t. Its like a physical impossibility.
On the flip side, however, I’m unusually good at laying down cards other people seem to find very difficult to let go of. I have no problem letting go of weak aces, pocket JJ or QQ if an ace or king comes out (although I have a harder time letting go of kings, and those asshole acechasers as I call them that can’t let go of ANY goddamn ace, no matter how pathetic, have beat me more than once that way. Drives me batty.)
I also let go of little pairs all the time: anything less than 99 that doesn’t make a set on the flop is gone to any bet, pretty much. And I very rarely raise with baby pairs.
My quirk is what I call “the inverse tilt.” After I win, I get super loose for about 3-5 games. I play some play money or dime games to burn off this optimism after a big win.
Oops…I made an error in my OP… I didn’t mean a simple flush draw, I meant a STRAIGHT flush draw… yeeps. No, I don’t chase all flushes, not at all. Just straight flushes. When I have 89 clubs and JQ clubs is out… you can take all my chips cuz I ain’t leavin’.
I find it extremely hard to lay down JTs pre-flop.
Nearly impossible to lay down JT of spades.
I know fully well statistically it’s a dog. And of course, suits have no strength in poker. But spades are the best, you know? ;D
It’s cost me more money than it’s ever won me. But damn it, I just like it. It’s my hand.
My brother (who is a far better player than I am, and I admit this) likes to tease me about this. I just point out that I made it to the final table the last time we played in Vegas and he busted out in like the third round.
I used to always play K 3, because twice I’ve played it and flopped K K 3. I knew that meant nothing statistically, but it was my “pet hand”. After a while it never hit again, and now I never play K 3.
I also hate Q 10, and I have a tendency to get it several times in a game. Never play it.
I hate to give Robot Arm (or any of the others in the Thursday Night poker game) any insight, but I play A-J very aggressively and it often gets me in trouble against A/Q and A/K.
If I am the button and the blinds are short stacked, you can almost always count on a raise from me, unless there are several limpers.
I think I am twice as likely to hit a flush on the river than an open-ended straight on the river. Technically, there is a better chance, as there could be as many as 9 “live” cards for a flush vs 8 live cards for a straight but it certainly is not a 2:1 ratio.
Is Texas Hold-Em pretty much the only game in town anymore?
A draw to an inside straight-flush would, all other things being equal, be a good bet-you can hit the straight, or the flush, or both (or am I missing something).
i do the same thing. especially when i am playing with mensa’s chips. they kind of feel dirty when i have them so i kind of either need to double them up or give them to someone else.
and what mensa said. we have a standing game on thursdays at 9 p eastern time.
the encouragement that we offer each other is a sight to behold (as long as you are not a minor).
there are not a whole lot of all ins in the first couple of hands. and other than mensa the rest of the gang would be the kind of folks that you would let sleep in the garage as long as the cars were locked.
i would like to play you a lot. you’ve only got thirteen outs. and if i am in after the river you can probably make book that i have more than that. if i have the same hole suit as you your outs go down to 4. and that’s only if i haven’t nutted a bigger straight or a boat or quads or anything else already. in that case you have one out. that sucks.
mensa?
definitely come join us on thursday. i just want to sit to your left.
My biggest leak is I get caught up in “conspiracy theories.”
I like nothing more than making a great call or a monster lay down. I like it even more than winning. So the problem is, if I make a read on a guy, I have an awful tendency to stay with my read, even in the face of OVERWHELMING evidence to the contrary. This has cost me my stack and cashes on many occasions. I just can’t let it go.
K7s: When I was starting, I didn’t know hand values, so I would play any ace or any king. It seemed like k7 was the only hand that hit for me, so I played it for a long time.
KQos: A couple of weeks ago, I had a string of about 5 folds of KQ in a row that would have been two pair or better. Now I play it even though the pot odds are worse than it should be. I haven’t won with it since.
Other games: I often play Omaha play money. For some reason, I make hundreds of thousands in PM but can’t play “real” Omaha to save my life. There’s kind of a zen aspect to it, and I find it helps me to see connections and make reads better in hold em.
