Word. She makes Shrub, Quayle, Reagan, and Agnew look like the Manhattan Project.
But when a supporter told Adlai Stevenson that “every thinking person in America is voting for you,” he said “That’s not enough!”. He was right. :shudder:

Verdict from the London judge:
Palin: Fuckwit. Obama: President.
On the right-wing forums, the Palin Victimization Syndrome is alive and well. They keep trying to paint Obama’s response to Stephanopolous’ question as some sort of personal attack on Palin, and are trying to imply that Palin’s getting under his skin* and that he’s scared of her.
A reporter asked Obama what he though of Palin’s views, and Obama dismissed her as being unqualified (and rightly so). And yet, somehow, that indicates to the Palin supporters that she’s somehow relevant.
Yeah, I don’t get it, either.
*[SUB]Ticks try to get under my skin, but I don’t want to elect them President.[/SUB]
To explain that statement – after the health care vote, she twittered “Don’t Retreat – reload!” and it became an unofficial slogan for SarahPAC (her political action committe) for a few days. In her defense, she clearly meant it as “we may have lost the battle today, but let’s keep fighting for what we believe in.” I don’t believe she was suggesting advocating literally loading the shotguns to rebel against congress.
However, after the statement, several members of congress who voted for the health care bill actually did start receiving credible death threats. Also, it was pointed out that her website had a map showing congressional races where districts with incumbent democrats were literally marked with a gun-sight target. (As in “we’re targeting these congressional districts with our fund-raising”, but obviously some right-wing crazies may have taken it as “let’s shoot those liberal communists”).
You can debate what she actually meant, but she was criticized for it and that’s why she joked about the “this is not a call to violence” disclaimer.
I seriously doubt anyone honestly believes she wanted to kill some libruls, the point is much like everything else she does or says it was a very fucking dumb thing to do.
Palin is making progress; at least now she knows North Korea is a separate country. Next up is this whole Virginia/West Virginia controversy.
Please tell me this is a joke.
No joke. McCain staffers said they discovered during her debate prep that she literally did not know that North and South Korea were separate countries. She showed an appalling ignorance of the most basic geography and history in general. She also thought that Africa was a country, did not understand the basic structure of the federal government (they had to start with explaining “three branches” like it was a middle school social studies class), and thought that Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11 (no kidding, she really thought we’d been attacked by Iraq and thought that was why we invaded it). She also didn’t care that she didn’t know these things and refused to be tutored on them. Hence her tactic of just pretending any question she doesn’t know the answer to is a “gotcha.”
It’s like she has the mentality and temperment of a high school cheerleader.
This alone should disqualify her for ANY level of leadership. Being President involves having your mind jam packed with minutia about every obscure issue you might ever have to deal with, every single day. You have to be able to talk intelligently about an extremely broad range of subjects. If she truly didn’t care that she didn’t know things and didn’t want to learn them, then she’s got no business in government.
Wait… no… please tell me you’re lying to me…
HOW IS SHE IN POLITICS?
How can conservatives support her?!
My head hurts…
focusonz?
If nothing else would sway the “debate” in Obama’s favor, it’s Palin invoking Reagan as someone who would never cave in like this. Reagan, during his visit to China, specifically stated that he would like to see nuclear arms “reduced by at least a third” in order to make the world a safer place. This is exactly what this treaty will do. In fact, during one speech, either during his campaign or presidency, Reagan advocated a nuclear-free world. Once again, Palin proves that she is nothing more than a demagogue who hasn’t the slightest morsel of intellectual curiosity. On the contrary, she is willfully ignorant.
I heard this back before the election, but thought it was too unreal to be true. Do you have any cites? Particularly on her refusing to be tutored.
McCain is a decent man, and I assume that his staff were normal intelligent people who , like McCain, honestly care about America. If Palin’s stupidity really scared them so much, surely one of them who genuinely cares about what is good for the country would have the courage to go public and expose her.
The answer is that conservatives are no longer interested in someone who deals with reality. In the reality-based world you will need to raise taxes to reduce the deficit. In the reality based world you look at the healthcare system in every other industrialized country in the world and see that they have lower costs and better outcomes than the US. In the reality-based world you see that progressive states have better higher income, less crime, and better health than the conservatives states. In the reality-based world you see that allowing gay people to marry does not weaken the marriage of anyone else.
As Colbert says, facts have a well know liberal bias. Palin is good at saying stuff that her audience wants to hear and avoiding things that they don’t. In Palin-land US tax rates are historically high and the rich are under attack. In Palin-land you can cure our dependence on foreign oil by simply drilling more domestically despite the fact that we have 2% of the the world’s oil reserves and consume 20% of the world’s oil. In Plain-land up is down, in is out, and anyone who says different is an elitist, east-coast snob.
If I was inclined to make chest-thumping statements of mock outrage in an effort to score cheap political points, I’d note that saying the U.S. would do nothing if punched by a schoolyard bully is a harsh and undeserved insult to the brave men and women who proudly serve America in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines with conventional weaponry made in the best factories by American workers, who all strive to keep America safe against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
How dare she say something like that.
Exactly. I quote: “” As I have indicated in previous statements to the Congress, my central arms control objective has been to reduce substantially, and ultimately eliminate, nuclear weapons and rid the world of the nuclear threat. The prevention of the spread of nuclear explosives to additional countries is an indispensable part of our efforts to meet this objective. I intend to continue my pursuit of this goal with untiring determination and a profound sense of personal commitment." Ronald Reagan March 25 1988
The entire premise that Obama is a far left radical “socialist” is complete and utter bullshit. He is, in reality, a moderate pragmatist, but the right wing has moved so far to the right in recent decades that anyone slightly left of Hitler can be cast as an extreme leftist.
Another example is the recent HCR legislation, which is amazingly similar to proposals made by Nixon and again by Republicans under Clinton.
Do these people honestly not KNOW this? Are they really THAT lacking in historical perspective? I fear so, at least wrt a large percentage of the demographic. But the politicians and even commentators who perpetuate this tripe? Color me dubious.
As a progressive liberal Independent, I voted for and support Obama but I don’t kid myself he is more liberal/left than he is. As musician Steve Earle said at a recent show I attended, “I am a socialist, and I can assure you that Obama isn’t.”
I love having a President who is articulate and has a sense of humor (not just a stupid smirk at inappropriate moments). Palin can’t even speak (think?) on her feet.
I sort of HOPE she’s on the ticket come 2012…it’d be an entertaining train wreck.
I’m more offended that she’s an elected official who thinks Africa’s a country, North and South Korea are one in the same (isn’t South Korea, like, super Westernized? It’s almost like they’re saying to the north “See? This is what YOU could have!”) and not have any fucking idea of how government works. Her schoolyard analogy is dwarfed by the offensiveness of the rest.
I, too, would like cites if you could provide them. Part of my brain is hoping you’re wrong.
I believe the source is the book “Game Change”, and those things are cited in this NYT article. It’s really not accurate to say that she didn’t know NK and SK were different countries. Sounds like she didn’t know how they ended up being different countries. But this book is somewhat controversial for its use of unnamed sources.
I have to admit, I’m also a little hazy on how the Koreas split up. Thank God for wikipedia.
Wasn’t Saddam Hussein behind it?
