Aslan of Narnia, I must give credit where credit is due. Nvme77 wrote this, I didn’t.
I agree with a lot of what dwc1970 said.
I like well constructed easy to read postings as opposed to some rambling mega-paragraph.
I don’t mind spoiler boxes so much - unless they are totally pointless such as Spoiler - the ship sinks at the end of the movie “Titanic”.
More Peeves
Lack of clarity in a posting such as - In the movie “TLFBMR” they stole the plot from an episode of “MWAWTHAB”.
Posting huge quotes of a posting to respond to one sentence.
As others have said, signatures get very stale very fast.
People posting threads that could easily have been researched on Google or a good reference site. e.g. “Anybody know what ‘faux pas’ means?”
Forums I visit most - GQ, Cafe and MPSIMS
Pet Peeve: Duplicate threads. Not like when the hamsters or your twitchy fingers result in multi-posting the same thread, but I mean this:
GQ
“Is Uvula Gladwyne Dead?”
GD
“Why Do People Care that Uvula Gladwyne Is Dead?”
Cafe Society
“Uvula Gladwyne’s Dead!”
“Uvula Gladwyne, 1910–2003”
“Oh, No, I just Heard that Uvula Gladwyne Died!”
IMHO
“What’s Your Favorite Uvula Gladwyne Movie?”
MPSIMS
“Uvula Gladwyne’s Dead!”
“Uvula Gladwyne, 1910–2003”
“Oh, No, I just Heard that Uvula Gladwyne Died!”
BBQ Pit
“Jeez, I hated Uvula Gladwyne”
“The Woman’s Dead—Stop Being Mean to Her!”
I pretty sick and tired of the ‘Vs’ threads.
I’ll be really happy when they have run their curse and we are done with them.
Uvula Gladwyne. That’s great. I just love the way it rolls off the tongue. Uuuuuvulaaa Gladwhine.
So now we need a Staff report on her, so that you can add:
CoSR: Who was Uvula Gladwyne, really?
Anyone else have a sudden urge to name a daughter “Uvula Gladwyne”?
I have to admit, I stole the name from P.G. Wodehouse: in his story The Rise of Minna Nordstrom, it’s one of the stage names she briefly considers. . .
I hate when people respond to a thread without actually reading the other posts.
I hate that the board is so slow at times and then you find out that the hamsters double posted afterall!
I don’t like flamers! Flamers are mean people.
It bugs me when people post IMHO stuff in MPSIMS. The following are threads which by subject, at least, seem to be IMHO:
This started out amusing. By the last line, it wasn’t. At all. Resolved: 90% of religious people
Your SDMB Habits and Pet Peeves
Has anyone here dealt with depression?
Stupidest school supply
Issued My 17 Year Old An Ultimatum…Should I Renig?
Prosiac Questions about the Alabama Supreme Court/10 Commandments Sculpture
So, when was the last time you pretended that a flashlight was a lightsabre?
The brilliant effing ELF–setting fires protesting pollution
what wierd name will they come up with next??
But that’s really minor and not even worth the effort it took to compile the list.
I read/post the bottom four thread groups, and lurk on GD. I’m not deep or researched enough to post there. I like watching the combatants go for each other’s throats, but lose interest when they resort to nitpicking.
There are some amazing people here, and I’m glad to be in their company.
My only real peeve here is the “I can’t believe nobody has mentioned…” posters. Like say in Cafe Society, somebody starts a thread called Most underrated rock guitarists and everybody chimes in with their candidate, describe how cool he is, then the inevitable squawking soapbox percher flaps in with:
So. Go. Ahead. and. MENTION him you MO-RON!!!

I put it in MPSIMS because I thought it was mudane and I feel I am at my witts end so it is pointless. I didn’t think the thread was all that interesting or worthy of putting it in IMHO.
Yeah, I can understand why people do it. MPSIMS is twice as big/busy as IMHO and it seems like the load could be split a little more.
And nobody get pissed that I mentioned their thread subject here, it was at a random time and I didn’t even look at the poster.
My major pet peeve is with people who have post counts above 100 who haven’t figured out the quote tags. So instead they do some annoying usenet thing:
> This is the stuff the other poster said. Things and stuff. Blah
> blah blah blah blah. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
or, worse, try to simulate it ASCII-style:
QUOTE:
This is the stuff the other poster said. Things and stuff. Blah blah blah blah blah. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
What makes me nuts is when posters with a debate-by-dissection style do this. For the love of mike, all you ever do is quote, so why don’t you take a couple of minutes to learn how to quote properly? Square-bracket que yoo oh tee ee square-bracket! How hard is that?!?
And Bruce Daddy, one of my other mild peeves is that the distinction between IMHO and MPSIMS is maddeningly vague to me. I’ve had threads moved from one ot the other, usually with no more explantion than “This is more of a MPSIMS thing . . .” or “. . . an IMHO thing . . .” and I am almost completely mystified. Too many posts fall into some sort of neverland between “frank exchanges of views” and “general chatter.” If you express a “great thought” and ask people what they think, have you crossed the line into a “poll”?
i always assumed IMHO means mundane pointless stuff that you want other’s opinion on; while MPSIMS is the ‘others’ forum for everything else…
i like to open all threads of interest in their own separate windows at the same time
i hate it when people are having so much fun they have to clean up their keyboards so often*
- i know, i know. i haven’t been here long enough for a pet peeve yet ok?
