Your Ten Favorite Songs

10 is hard. In no particular order, and confining myself to 1 song per artist, today they are:

Rakim - Dead Can Dance.

Levi Stubbs’ Tears - Billy Bragg

Fool’s Gold- Stone Roses

Such A Shame - Talk Talk

The Seed - Aurora

Loaded - Deacon Blue

Strangers - Sigrid

Spirit - Bauhaus

Shatter - Shelleyan Orphan

Not Too Soon - Throwing Muses

The official video version is the version I like. Tomorrow, there’d likely be 9 changes.

From 1 to 10:

Shine on you crazy diamond (Pink Floyd)
Mad man moon (Genesis)
Ghosts (Japan)
Firth of Fifth (Genesis)
Kayleigh (Marillion)
Private investigations (Dire Straits)
The ninth wave (Kate Bush)
Killer queen (Queen)
This masquerade (Carpenters)
The sound of silence (Simon and Garfunkel)

If you consider the Kate Bush entry “cheating”, my #11 is Desperado (Eagles).

Closer to Fine – Indigo Girls
Sunday Girl – Blondie
BaShana HaBa’a – by Nurit Hirsch and Ehud Manor – original recording Ilan & Ilanit (and my favorite)
I Spent My Last $10 on Birth Control and Beer – 2 Nice Girls
Only Yesterday – Carpenters
Lithium – Nirvana
Hard Times – Stephen Foster – Mare Winningham has a good recording
The Times They Are A-changin’ – Bob Dylan
Rey Nimrod – Sephardic song – Yehoram Gaon has a good recording
Virginia Woolf – Indigo Girls

I’m dense. Why would Kate Bush be “cheating”?

Amanda - Boston
These Dreams - Heart (Nancy)
Barracuda - Heart (Ann)
You Might Think - Cars (Ric)
Let’s Go - Cars (Ben)
Too Much Time on My Hands - Styx
Romeo’s Tune - Steve Forbert
Funky Town - Lipps Inc.
Ballroom Blitz - Sweet
Mony Mony - Billy Idol

Because that track is one whole album side and consists of multiple named ‘pieces’

Indeed, but they form a continuous and coherent piece (also given a name by the artist). That’s why I regard the combination as one song, but I know many would nto agree.

I’ll disagree with at least half of these in an hour, but here goes:

“'Round Midnight,” probably Miles Davis’s version is the go-to
“Take the ‘A’ Train,” almost any version led by the Duke
“Dogs,” Pink Floyd
“Superman” main titles, John Williams
“Anotherloverholenyohead,” (12" version) Prince and the Revolution
“American Pie,” Don McLean
“It’s All About the Pentiums,” Weird Al Yankovic
“Riviera Paradise,” Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
“Georgia on My Mind,” Ray Charles
“Bring On the Night/When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What’s Still Around,” Sting (from Bring on the Night)

American Pie - Don McLean
Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen
Forever Young - Bob Dylan
Simon Zealot/Poor Jerusalem - Jesus Christ Superstar
Glory Days - Bruce Springsteen
We Didn’t Start The Fire - Billy Joel
Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds - The Beatles
Born on the Fourth of July - Tom Paxton
Hotel California - The Eagles
Whistle Down the Wind - Whistle Down the Wind

There is no possible way I could answer this and have it be accurate and scientifically replicated by asking me the same question a week from now, so I’ll just go with the first ten songs I could think of that I emotionally speak to me every time I hear them:

  1. “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys
  2. Nocturne Op 9. #2, in E-flat major, Frederick Chopin
  3. “Only Shallow” - My Bloody Valentine
  4. “1979” - (The) Smashing Pumpkins
  5. “So What” - Miles Davis
  6. “Dig Me Out” - Sleater-Kinney
  7. “Peg” - Steely Dan (this is a recent one that I’ve fallen in love with; like within the last two years. I’m not big into Steely Dan, but this one just does it for me. That groove, man. Rick Marotta on drums, and Chuck Rainey on the bass. God damn.)
  8. “Map Ref 41°N 93°W” - Wire
  9. “Corner of the Sky” - Original Pippin Cast recording (1972, I think – not the newer one)
  10. “Somthing” - Beatles

Ask me the same question in a couple of weeks, and you’re likely to get, at best, three of those mentioned again. It’s such a “what mood am I in” question.

In no order and always subject to revision:

“We Can Work It Out,” the Beatles
“Shine on You Crazy Diamond,” Pink Floyd
“1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” Richard Thompson
“Mayor of Simpleton,” XTC
“Living Proof,” Gregory Alan Isakov
“Peggy’s Kitchen Wall,” Bruce Cockburn
“One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later),” Bob Dylan
“Tattoo’d Lady” (Irish Tour '74 version), Rory Gallagher
“Small Change (Got Rained on With His Own .38),” Tom Waits
“Traveling Along,” Jason Isbell

That’s tough, I like lots of music.

Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine
Drivin’ on 9 by The Breeders
Creque Alley by The Mamas and Papas
Devil’s Bride by Electric Wizard
Playing the Part by Jamey Johnson
Enter Sandman by Metallica
I Walk the Line by Johnny Cash
Lost Highway by Hank Williams
Let’s Stay Together by Al Green
I Fall to Pieces by Patsy Cline

Hey. I assumed that “songs” mean “songs.”

Pieces written for a vocalist with accompaniment. like Schubert or Brahms lieder for singer and piano, or Tin Pan Alley, or blues, or rock.

Instrumental art music, like Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9 in A Major (“Kreutzer”), or instrumental jazz, like Louis Armstrong’s “West End Blues,” are RIGHT OUT.

This is the very definition of impossible, so I’ll just list the first random-ish 10 that come to mind - which will depend as much on recent listening to any “ultimate” list, and definitely not in any kind of order. One per artist/band.

“Underwater Moonlight” - The Soft Boys
“The Elements” - Tom Lehrer/Sir Arthur Sullivan
“Dogs” - Pink Floyd
“The Most Exalted Potentate of Love” - The Cramps
“Palace of Love” - Doll by Doll
“Amelia” - Joni Mitchell
“Aja” - Steely Dan
“She Loves You” - The Beatles
“Immigrant Song” - Led Zeppelin
“Rock Lobster” - The B-52’s

Any of these is in rotation with probably half a dozen or more by the same artists, and it looks like I’ve missed out Kate Bush, Bowie and the Bonzos (just the 'B’s) not to mention “One Man Guy” by Louden Wainwright III. Oh well, come back next week and try again.

Oh shit, you’re right. That means I get two bonus selections replacing Chopin and Miles Davis. Hmm…I’ll give those to:

“Waterloo Sunset” - The Kinks
“Roadrunner” - The Modern Lovers (only because I listened to it yesterday and was reminded of how damned cool that song is. Like I said above, ask me again next week, and you’ll only see maybe three of the songs repeated on the list.)

Ok this is really tough, and like many others I’ll change my mind in an hour
Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Primal Scream - Motley Crue
Custard Pie - Led Zeppelin
Abacab - Genesis
I Love It Loud - KISS
Connected - Stereo MC’s
Sabotage - Beastie Boys
Fame - David Bowie
Magic Man - Heart
Everlong - Foo Fighters

How the hell did I skip “Roadrunner?”

All disclaimers as posted by others above. I’m mad at you for asking and mad at myself for answering. :smack:
