To be fair, more than anyplace this side of a Junior High girls bathroom, the Dope values tone over content: if you can’t shoehorn what you have to communicate into the local idiom, it really doesn’t matter how true or valid it is. People here will refuse to listen to you until you make yourself sound exactly like them. To a certain degree, of course, it’s understandable; you need to make yourself understood. But the mob will come down on you harder for perceived tone than for clarity, which can sometimes be self defeating. At any rate conformity of tone is often enforced with a savagery beyond that brought to bear on any other infraction, as this thread and countless others demonstrate. It’s really the last unquestioned bastion of Doper intolerance, and I for one don’t hold out much hope that it will ever be openly acknowledged, let alone addressed and considered.

Personally, I found your understanding of science and scientific critique to be rather lacking.

In the OP of the evolutionary psychology thread, the OP was vexed about why evolutionary psychology was so routinely insulted and debased by some people who considered EP to not be scientific. In this, he/she was entirely correct: Most people – largely made up of very ignorant people from po-mo constructivists to cretinous high-school yahoos like orcenio – are so blinded by the ignorant K-6 textbook definition of “THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD” that they hold that anything that does not conform to that infantile “METHOD” simply cannot be considered science at all.

As I stated in that thread, there are many evolutionary biologists (including most primatologists that I know) who are well-respected, highly-intelligent scientists, yet they view Evolutionary Psychology as not-scientific for several reasons. This is not to say that nothing good has come out of Evolutionary Psychology or that all theories held by Evolutionary Psychology are bunk, just as a ‘science’ in general, it isn’t good science. I’ve explained some of the reasons why in that thread. This doesn’t say that Evolutionary Psychology can’t be done with good, proper science, just that it often isn’t.

The debate over Evolutionary Psychology as a science or not is done by scientists themselves and your accusations that the opposition mostly consists of the ignorant is flat out wrong.

Exactly. But his problem is compounded by clunky, effort-laden writing. It’s really like listening to music that’s just “off” in some way—unpleasant. If someone like Scylla had decided to go off on a long insulting rant it would have at least been a fun thing to read. But ambushed doesn’t have that skill. That’s fine, not everyone does, and it’s not a testament to anything other than not being a gifted writer. But as as Harry Callahan said, “Man’s got to know his limitations.”

I don’t expect you to dig through content and find a bunch of cites, but do you have any good examples off the top of your head? Because I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Actually I think that our insistence on adopting a particular tone is much-acknowledged; it’s just that it is usually approached from the other end of the literacy spectrum. New members who post in txt or 1337 get ignored, mocked or (at best) strongly encouraged to write in coherent sentences.

But I disagree that this was the case here. I suspect that in any group anywhere using any idiom, expressing yourself in a way that strongly implies (if not states outright) that you’re the smartest guy in the room and anyone who doesn’t agree with you is clearly too dumb to understand what you’re talking about will not win you many friends regardless of the topic.

QFT; you ‘broke it all down’ in this one post. My commitment to that thread was making 3 short posts (none of which were outrageous) before Ambushed decided I was the complete and utter bane of his existence.
