You're Getting Windows 10 Whether You Want It Or Not!!!

I’d bet that most of the people reading this want to make lots of money. Therefore the whole world is deliberately evil.

I do, but I don’t screw other people to get it, as requiring they buy a new version of an operating system every few years.

i don’t have a camera.
How the Hell am I supposed to sign in?

Who says you need to buy a new operating system every few years? You can keep the operating system you bought when you bought the computer you are using. You don’t have to buy a new one.

It is true that Microsoft only supported Windows XP for 12 years, and after that stopped creating security updates for it. But the operating system itself will work just fine, as long as you don’t connect the system to the internet.

I dunno, maybe use the keyboard you typed your post on

Tim Cook and I refute that.

How is it that releasing new versions of a product and retiring the old ones is ‘screwing people’? What organisation in this market sector does anything different? Apple does it, Google does it, Autodesk does it, Adobe does it, the little guys like Corel and Winzip do it. Even Canonical and all the open-source guys do it.

What organisation in any other market sector does something different? Car manufacturers release new models and stop producing spare parts for the older ones. It’s the standard practice for almost any consumer product.

Turn off Windows update, then you can’t get the “upgrade” even if you want it, let alone have it forced on you.

Good luck trying to get Win10 to work on my Mac

I don’t have Boot Camp installed, so there’s no possibility at all…

You can’t play your DVDs on Windows 10.

Can you play Doom I and II ?

No one except in software actually forces the issue. You can get older parts from other people. And I am allowed to run my 1970s car for as long as it will keep functioning. Someone uses Windows XP? They’re being irresponsible.

Someday, I hope that stability will win out, and companies will get that people just want stuff to stay the same, and just update the back end. Hopefully, Microsoft’s claim about Windows 10 being the last version of Windows will cause that to happen. Especially since they rolled back a bunch of their big changes from Windows 8.

You mention cars–little has changed in the user interface. Because that’s the way we like it. You might get a new gadget or something, but the fundamentals remain the same.

Still, at least you’re getting it. I’m trying to update my dad’s computer and keeps saying it’s not eligible. It’s got Windows 7 Home Premium, and was bought from Walmart, so I know it’s legit. It has all updates.

I’m having to manually install it.

I’m furious that they are forcing Win 10 on me. It defeats the whole purpose of getting my Mac in the first place.

“How do you know when someone is a user of Apple technology?”

“They just fucking tell you”

New wrinkle? I’m running W7 with no plans to upgrade. (I have a simple rule: I upgrade to a new operating system when I buy a new computer and not before.)

I’ve always had the Windows Upgrade set to ‘ask me’. This morning when I did my weekly check for upgrades I found something new and unpleasant: they had Windows 10, in the ‘optional’ category, but ALREADY checked for download.

Mind, this has never been true in the past. The upgrades under Optional were always unchecked. It looks like this is an effort to ‘sneak’ the W10 upgrade onto people. Fat chance in my case. The file is something over 2700 MB and I’m on dial up on this computer.

Yeah, I won’t notice an upgrade taking about SIX DAYS to complete. :smack:

More fun though: I unchecked that box, then told it to “hide” that update. Then I ran the ‘look for updates’ again… and guess what? Not only is that W10 file still showing up in the optional category (previously hidden upgrades have indeed vanished from sight) but the damned thing is AGAIN PRE-CHECKED for download!

What a PITA.

That prompted me to check. Same thing.
Also, a update to install Skype that I got rid of months ago after it was snuck in.

VLC plays DVDs just fine in Windows 10. And it’s free.
Sucks that they got rid of Media Center, though.

Unlike all those in a Windows thread lamenting their collective ball and chain.
