You're hopelessly out of touch if you've never heard of...

Test candidate: Myself
Age: 42

Gwen Stephanie
No clue. Unless this is Gwen Stafani, in which case she’s old-school 1990, your parent’s generation
P Diddy
Again, old-school Sean Combs, Puff Daddy, etc. Do 20-somethings not have anything new, that they still have to mine the 1990’s for?
Maroon 5
Heard of them, but no idea what they play.
Christina Aguilera
Again, 20-somethings, why are you listening to your parent’s music?
Katy Perry
Hey, something sort of new. I recognize a couple of her songs.
Justin Timberlake
Sigh…90’s guy still carrying on.
Beyonce
Still waiting for some new talent…
Justin Bieber
…aiiiggghh. Put me back in the 90’s. Please!

Some of them might mention
Nikki Minaj
No idea
Snoop
Again, not remotely new
Jay Z
No idea
Black Keys
Heard of for the first time last week, like their stuff
Adele
Mrs G loves her and plays her constantly
Glee
Have never watched it, though commercials for it saturate the airwaves
Florence and the Machine
No idea

So for the test results, I find myself scoring very highly on 1990s pop culture and music. Based on a statistical sampling of the test, the pop-culture of hot-button 20-something youth is really just 60% 1990s nostalgia.

…dubstep…

Well this is OBVIOUSLY a very important topic, lol.

The only thing I know for sure on that list is Twitter. The rest, I presume are TV shows or movies.

Aren’t kids today into WOW? I know it’s a popular game, although I’ve never played it, and don’t know what the letters w.o.w. stand for.

What about cars? What’s considered a cool car these days?

What is with those little carts? I went into a Whole Foods a couple of weeks ago for that vegetarian roast (started a thread about it a while back) and noticed their itty bitty carts… I hadn’t been in one of their stores more than a handful of times ever, and not in many years in any case… are these their standard carts? Is it because that’s all the food anyone shopping there can afford to buy? I thought it was a quirk of that store… interesting..

Btw, I admit I am out of touch. I know who Justin Bieber is mostly from his Graham Norton interview. ::hangs head in shame:: He may have sung on said show, but I don’t remember it. It wasn’t my type of music so I didn’t make note of it.

Vaguely related to the thread: Pandora is both a blessing and a twisting knife. On the blessing side, it lets you listen to hours on end of music you’ll probably like. On the knife end, it keeps you away from hearing a lot of new music that who knows–you might end up liking?

My inexposure to video games growing up was also affected by the fact that my mom tended to buy me Christmas presents and stuff like sets of sheets for my bed, or new pajamas, rather than toys/video game consoles*/etc

*for most of my childhood there was a color TV in my mom’s room, a color TV in her roommate’s room, and a 13" black and white tv in the living room that I was occasionally allowed to watch, when I was allowed into the living room at all (there was a weird taboo about that that I’ve never understood. Why I wasn’t allowed in there has always escaped me.) So chances are even if I had a video console, it would have sucked to play on it.

World of Warcraft (Though for some reason I want to always say “wizard” of Warcraft. No idea why.)

Please to be enjoying It’s gettin’ REAL in the Whole Foods Parking Lot

I’m 47, watch HGTV, NatGeo, History- type TV and the only radio I listen to is whatever someone else is playing in the car. I get most of my entertainment on the internet.

Gwen Stephanie
Does she still wear those ridiculous stilt high-heels and run around with Japanese anime girls come to life?
P Diddy
How long has it been since he’s created a pop group and then ritually consumed their flesh in a vain attempt at gaining a little talent for himself?
Maroon 5
I bought Songs About Jane. For myself. To have.
Christina Aguilera
Used to love her. Now I can’t look at her because she looks like she’s a Christina Aguilera blow-up doll.
Katy Perry
Love her. Not enough to buy her CD, though. I usually don’t buy music.
Justin Timberlake
He can be funny. Not an awful actor. Picks pretty good song producers.
Beyonce
She better pray her kid looks like her and not her fugly husband. It’ll be like Whitney and Bobbi Kristina all over again
Justin Bieber
He’s the stupid hair guy. I know I’ve heard a song of his but damn if I can tell you what it was.

Nikki Minaj
What is it with female singers and dressing like clowns?
Snoop
He better get hisself a jobby-job! (yeah, that’s old. Still cracks me up.)
Jay Z
He’s got 99 problems and Beyonce is one.
Black Keys
White bluesy guys, right?
Adele
Don’t have her CD-- yet. Love her.
Glee
I watched all last season but not one show this season.
Florence and the Machine
Never heard of them.
